Small, light wieght, cheap.

Everything. I sold as soon as I could. It is not a lens. It is a joke. Customer Service never used Similar Products Used: Tokina AT-X Pro 28-70/2.6-2.8 Canon EF 50/1.8 I. Canon EF 28-135/3.5-5.6 IS USM |

Strength:
Its'' a Canon.
Weakness:
distortion optics build quality Good lens for people who step up from mini lens compacts, ugly lens for anyone who thinks of quality. It only produces reasonable picture at stopdown to f11. Pincushion is bad and all the way from 28-80. Build quality is bad. If you need a cheap zoom, go for Tamron or Sigma. Strength:
absolut light weight, fast and quiet focusing, spot on
Weakness:
plastic and cheap feel, not very rigid, dull colours and contrasts Certainly a nice lens to start with, it's small, light and focusing is reliable. But to get good images you should go for other lenses. An absolute banger is the EF 50 f/1.8 with it's aperture and sharpness. Worlds from the 28-80 and only half the price, no zoom though. Strength:
Fast and quite USM motor. Lightweight.
Weakness:
Picture quality is fair, good at best. This stock lense is a good choice for beginners or the casual shooter who's a tight budget. The USM focusing is great but I feel photo quality is the premier determination of a lenses value. That's why I can't give it more than 2 stars overall. Strength:
Relatively Inexpensive, Good Intro Lens I suppose
Weakness:
The color you get from this lens is drab, cheap construction This lens is included with the Elan and Rebel Kits and is generally purchased w/ these kits at the entry level because after purchasing a body most amateurs don't want to part with the cash for quality glass. I don't know of anyone who has bought this lens "stand alone." It does, however, get the job done for a low price, and if you use punchy films like velvia you can still get nice color. I would steer clear of this lens and opt for something (maybe without the usm motor?) with higher quality optics. The lens is, afterall, the most important part of your picture taking endeavor. Strength:
The lens seems ok (although my frame of reference is almost nil). The great part about this lens is the Ultrasonic Mount (USM) that makes focusing on this lens quick and quiet.
Weakness:
I have encountered no problems with it, but like I said my frame of reference is small. I only recently switched from using Point and Shoots to an SLR (in this case the Canon Rebel 2000). I have enjoyed the pictures taken with this lens so far. I think the pictures are good and that they are getting better as my experience grows. The bottom line for me is that this lens is not the weak link in my quest for great pictures. As my experience grows, I will want better optics but for now I am satisfied. Customer Service I haven't had a need for it yet. Similar Products Used: Canon's non-USM 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 |

Strength:
Wide angle to Portrait
Weakness:
Lense has come apart two times, the first time I had it fixed, this time I am looking for another lense. The Ultrasonic focus worked great initially but this camera lense was babied and still broke twice! This is the only lense I have had come apart on me, not only once, but twice!!! The second time was at a 25th aniversary party...rather embarassing! The lense came apart during normal use. The lense and the camera were never dropped or damaged. I will stick with Tokina or Vivitar's Series 1 lenses in the future. Canon should be ashamed to offer this on their Elan cameras. Customer Service The price to fix the EF lense was $90.00 and about 4 weeks....Canon should offer a loaner program. Similar Products Used: Tokina lenses with OM-2 |

Came with the Eos Elan II kit. Quiet and focuses fast
Weakness:
No distance scale, poly lens mount. Feels kind of cheap. I was a little disappointed with this fifth generation of the Canon 28-80 USM Lens. I have a nice first Generation one that came with my A2 6 years ago that is a much better lens. It's got a nice metal lens mount, and a distance scale and it feels solid. Sharp, quiet, and fast to focus in all but worst light. Also excellent close in.
Weakness:
Could let in more light, but then at this price you can't complain. A lens for most occasions. Great value and great optical performance. This is the lens I use 95% of the time. Customer Service Not needed Similar Products Used: Zeiss 35mm fixed. |
