Strength:

Ruggedness, fastes focus out there, sharp pictures, simplicity in use.

Weakness:

Heavy use, no problems as of yet.

Many may say that this lens is garbage, but you can't get any better for your money. This lens works very well, and is rugged. USM is incredible on these Canon systems!

Strength:

1.Lightweight
2.USM for fast focusing

Weakness:

1.Poor optics at almost the entire focal length
2.Poor built (too plasticky).

This is a standard kit lens and the "V" denotes a fifth generation 28-80mm lens. According to internet literature on this lens, and generally believed of a lens of such a market life, the manufacturers hv been cutting corners to reduce cost(read: quality reduction). In fact, this lens is made in Taiwan, in contrast with the usual place of Japan.

Is it the same? If u hv a car say Honda Acura made in Japan and one made in USA, which is better?

For beginners who can't tell the diff, it is pretty good. But pairing this lens with a mid-range camera(eg.Elan II onwards)does not do justice to your camera. If u do own such a body, discard this lens.

Street value is abt USD150 and 2nd hand value? USD50 if u're lucky. That says a lot abt this lens...

Strength:

Cheap
Quiet "USM" focusing

Weakness:

Image quality is horrible.
I put this on my Eos A2E and the results were disasterous--Really did not do justice to the camera body at all. The lense construction is cheap and flimsy. It's made in Taiwan or China so I suppose that says it all. DON'T BUY IT! Everyone keeps saying that this is a great beginner lense. NO! This lense will do nothing but ruin your confidence, if not completely turn you off to photography completely. If you are on a budget and need a good lense, get yourself a 50mm/1.8 for 90 bucks. now that's a decent lens for the money.

If you are at all serious about photography, don't make the stupid mistake of buying this lens. I wasted 129 dollars of my hard earned money for this piece of garbage and all it's done is give me high blood pressure. It produces pics comparable to a mid-range point-and-shoot junkola.

Strength:

relatively cheap for the first time buyer, i bought it in kit w/ the elan IIe. Decent for the first time photographer - its a wonderful lens to start with, just know you'll need to move on, usm focusing, lightweight

Weakness:

dull colors, poor contrast, glare problems throughout range in bright sunlight, too slow at 50mm

Great lens for the beginner. Its alot of plastic, but plastic can actually be BETTER than metal. plastic doesnt dent and this plastic takes alot of abuse - i hiked with the elanIIe and this lens attached (no protection like case) stuck in my backpack in glacier national park - not a scratch or a chip on the lens! its not the high-quality optic of L seris or even more expensive lenses, but hey for a your 1st investment its a good choice, or if you just plan on taking snapshots, this lens will do you fine. If you want to get serious, but this and then invest in a 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 and a 2x converter

Strength:

Good focal length covering wide angle to low end portrait. quick and quiet USM focusing.

Weakness:

Very cheaply constructed, WAY TOO MUCH PLASTIC. The aperture is too slow at 80mm(but you get what you pay for).

This lens is exactly what you pay for. A cheap optic that lets you see 28-80mm, but puts a less than gratifying image on your negative. Its been a decent lens, but I'm ready to move on.

Customer Service

None needed, although I dropped it from a picnic table right on the lens once, but it survived unscathed.

Strength:

Light weight

Weakness:

poor color above 4 inch format.
not very sharp.
poor construction.

Okay for casual small format pictures only. The construction is very cheap, lots of play between focus barrel and lens holder. 5X7 pictures lacked good color and sharpness but smaller pictures seemed okay.

Ultrasonic motor

Weakness:

Poor resolution and sharpness
Poor contrast
Poor color redention
Prone to flare

I traded my 38-76mm lens for the 28-80mm as I wanted the extra wide angel of 28mm. What a mistake! Even 7x5 prints lacked sharpness, especially around the edges, images were dull with poor color. This lenas is rubbish. The early makes (the one which have MADE IN JAPAN pint) were reported ok, but make V is made in Taiwan, out of palstic and is a complete desaster. The make V is the worst lens on the market in its class. Check independedt test results on www.photodo.com

Following someone the internet advice I ended up trading it in for ef 50mm 1.8, and what a great lens it is!

Soif you can avoid this d*** 28-80mm mk V, ultrasonic motor is good, but so what? You simply cannot take good pictures with this lens. It is only good as a paper weight. The problem is that most entry level cameras (Canon EOS 300/Rebel 2000) come with this lens as a default. You would be much better if you buy a kit with 35-80mm lens, which is although is not the best, but at least is not such a disaster as 28-80mm mk V.

Bottom line: AVOID 28-80mm, it is officially the WORST lens on the market. Check www.photodo.com for the MTF charts.

Strength:

-Low price
-Light weight
-Quiet, fast USM focusing
-Useful focal length range

Weakness:

-Flare-prone
-Cheap feel
-Difficult to focus manually

Despite what some other reviewers have said, this isn't the universe. Yes, it's cheap; yes, it's not the best. But if you're mindful of its limitations, you CAN take good pictures with it. I took it on a short trip to Rome, and the pictures were mostly fantastic--a couple I blew up to 8x10 (black & white, though), and they looked great, if a little lacking in contrast. Overall, a good lens, but if you're a quality fanatic you could do better.
