Canon EF 28-90mm f/4.0-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 28-90mm f/4.0-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

The standard lens for entry-level and mid-range EOS cameras. Compared to the current EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 V USM standard zoom, the new EF 28-90mm USM lens provides extended telephoto range useful for portraiture and a variety of other applications with virtually no increase in size, weight or cost.

Strength:

Light weight and fast focus.

Weakness:

Your photos look like they were taken using a point and shoot camera.

Overall this is an OK lens for snapshots and the like. I was very disapointed when comparing this lens to a old 35-80 Tamaron SP on my Nikon. Listen to what other people have said here and don't buy this lens as part of a kit unless money is real tight.

Everything but the price.

I got it only because I wanted to learn how to use my new Eos 7e and I was pretty much a begginer. With that in mind, I highly recommend you do the same if you want to learn photography. The range is good even for outdoor sports where u r somewhat away from your target. But I think that''s about as good a praise as I can give it. The aperture is so small at 70mm+ that I rather take pictures at 50mm or less where I can still go for f/4.8 or less. Even on a portra or press film from kodak or fuji, the less simply cannot produce good results on indoors or overcast days. Quality feels cheap, mainly due to the plastics involved. I got a 24mm 2.8 and about to go for a 28-70mm 2.8L lens for a good wideangle and zoom range coverage. If you are not into sports, I think this will pretty much cover your needs.

Lens came with the kit (Canon EOS300)
Steered clear of the 28mm-80mm after the poor performance reports.
Very pleased with it. Great for landscapes and portraits.

Strength:

- No (or almost no)Vignetting
- No visible distorsion

Weakness:

- Not true Ultra sound motor: it is impossible to correct the AF.
- Flary at large apertures.
- f/4.0 and f/5.6 is too high for portrait.
- Build quality so-so.

To be honest, I bought this lense only because the
50mm/1.8 was not available. I have to admit that for 120$ I could not expect a much better zoom. You have to go to manual to put a sun protection (you risk to break the AF motor) and you will need it because the lens is sensible to side light.
Otherwise for a normal use I did not have any problem and I am more satisfied by the lense than I expected originally. This lense will give satisfaction in most of the cases.

Customer Service

I did not need it.

Strength:

Cheap..
Silent..
good enough for first few months of casual life.
Cant see much distortion

Weakness:

no FTM
front element not stable at all.
Confused AF at backlight/low light

First lense i get with EOS7(EOS30)
good enough for most fo location.
Sadly, i cant go anywhere without a tripod.
Im wating for money to build up so I can buy 28-135 IS.

Beware.. if you have cash to spend, dont get this lense.. at lease get FTM.

Strength:

Cheap, small.

Weakness:

Everything other than cheap and small.

It certainly is cheap for a Canon, and at that it will produce OK results, with color and contrast marginal -- even at this price. However, if you are a little more serious about photography then this lens will disappoint you more often than not. It is just too soft in large apertures and its construction is pretty flimsy with a very loose zoom barrel. The plastic mount is also a potential problem. Of course it is not Full Time Manual or Internal/Rear Focusing, but then these are the least of its limitations. I would just barely pass it as a starter lens, and in my opinion it should not even be offered as a kit option with the EOS ELAN 7/7E (why pay all that for a great body to use with such a poor lens Canon?). For the same amount of money (or less) you can get the Tamron 28-105mm f/4-5.6 -- a much better lens in every way. Better yet, go for the Canon 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM II instead. It costs twice as much but the quality and lens capabilities are just great! Two stars across the board for this point-and-shoot quality, SLR price lens.

Customer Service

Don't know.

Strength:

Light, good zoom range.

Weakness:

Quality and sharpness varying from wide to tele. Wide is vignetting, distortion but is relatively sharp. Normal 50mm is very unsharp, telephoto seems to be good.
Made of plastics.

I was used to shoot with fix focus MD Rokkor and Minolta XG. Heavy, made of glass and metal. Well, times are changing and Canon offer light 28-90 lens as basic lens with EOS300. Camera is really much better, than bundled zoom lens. Do not buy it, if there is any other choice. Take fix focus EF 50/1.8 - similar price, better pictures. If you need zoom, spend more money.
