Canon EF 28-90mm f/4.0-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

Canon EF 28-90mm f/4.0-5.6 USM 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

The standard lens for entry-level and mid-range EOS cameras. Compared to the current EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 V USM standard zoom, the new EF 28-90mm USM lens provides extended telephoto range useful for portraiture and a variety of other applications with virtually no increase in size, weight or cost.

Strength:

Light weight.
Good optical quality.
Fast and quite AF

Weakness:

None

This review is for the non-USM version of the same lens (Canon EF 28-90mm f/4.0-5.6.)

The lens is very light, convenient for use, fast autofocus and resonably sharp. Although sharpness could be better, I couldn't find any difference in sharpness comparing to the 28-105 USM. I compared postcard size prints. I think the 28-105 AF is slower.

Strength:

Cheap
Close Focusing
Light
USM

Weakness:

Flimsily made
cheap glass, soft images unless stopped down to F11 or lower, low maximum F Stops prevent the USM from accomplishing much, none of the perks of owning a manufacturer's lens.

Every packaged kit-lens canon has provided since the 50mm 1.8 FD (before 1987) has been junk. Admittedly any zoom that costs $130 or so is bound to be junk, regardless of the feature, but its almost unbelievable that a lens could be this bad optically. I can live with the junky feel and the lack of FTM, but I can give no better advice than to avoid any kit including this lens or any zoom close to it in price, regardless of manufacturer. Buy the 50mm 1.8EF if you cannot afford a better lens, the 50mm will at least deliver sharpness at a usable f-stop. You'll even save a little money at that~

Customer Service

I love canon, but lenses of this quality should be left to point and shoot-ers, who would be better served by owning a compact than an overpriced junky kit-lens.

Strength:

Compact
Useful zoom range
Reasonably good sharpness
Looks nice

Weakness:

Aperture not large enough

As a wedding photographer. I am very pleased with this lens. It is light and compact. I like even the look of the lens on my Canon Eos 300 which I use now for my wedding assignments. So far I have used it on 14 weddings and almost 100 rolls of film,(Didn't need to change lens!) and all my customers are satisfied. Well, I have to like this lens, it is not expensive and it helps me earn a living!

Strength:

Nice range in the zoom, very fast to focus. It is a great lens to keep on the camera and ready for that quick photograph.

Weakness:

a lot of plastic, would have prefered a faster lens.

purchased this lens with the EOS 7E so it was an excellent value for the price, Canon offered a rebate with the lens, nice zoom range, very easy to use.

Strength:

Beyond 80 mm.
Fast AF
Light

Weakness:

Very soft lense
Feels flimsy
Barrel moves when manual focusing

It came with my new Eos 30, so I use it with it, until I get the money to upgrade to a better one. This is just a beginner lense, and it should not be bought for itself, unless you have no other choice (difficult if money is not problem).
It's very soft almost in any situation, you'll see it even shooting slides.

Strength:

Decent focal range
Light
As quiet as other USM lenses
As part of the Elan7E kit the price is right

Weakness:

Rather soft at 90mm
Feels cheap
No full time manual focus

Decent lens for the money. I am infinitely more satisfied with the 28-135 IS. The softness at 90mm actually makes some portraits look nice. This was reported by Pop Photo and I found it to be true with some animal portraits from the zoo. Odds are if you buy this lens as part of the kit you will soon step up to the 28-135 IS or the 28-70 2.8L (if you can afford it).

Strength:

Cheap package with EOS30

Weakness:

Softish everywhere and very very soft at 90´.

Very very soft. Honestly I was disappointed. It is worth buying if tied together with a body and the price is right. Otherwise I'd go for a Sigma, Tamron or what ever. This is definitely not a Canon quality product.

Weakness:

Sometimes has trouble focusing when taking closeup photos of furry animals.

Great beginners lens. Will be replaced with a more sturdy one at sometime. Really does not do well when photographing animal fur - hunts endlessly on my EOS 30.

Strength:

Usefulish range.

Just about fast enough at 28mm.

Quickish zoom action.

It's a lens.

Weakness:

Plastic, plastic, plastic.

Not brilliant image quality, infact not a massive improvement on an Ixus L1.

Came packaged with EOS 30/Elan 7E as a kit, and you are much better off going for a 28-105 USM which will cost £100 ($145) more, but results will be 100x better!

This isn't a great lens, and you would be much better going for the 28-105.

Customer Service

Strength:

lightweight, came with camera as kit

Weakness:

plasticky, dissapointing results: unsharp images except when stopped down

The 28-90 lens came with my Eos 30 (Elan7) as part of the kit. I was very dissapointed with it - the results were vastly inferior to those produced with by old T70 camera attached with a Tamron 28-80 SP f3.5-4.2 lens. I quickly upgraded the Canon lens to a Tamron 24-135 SP f3.5-4.5 and the results are now much better. Bottom line: AVOID THE CANON 28-90 USM LENS AT ALL COST.
