Strength:

pads the front of the camera in the event of a fall.Actually, you could probably use the images as a good starting point for arty manipulations

Weakness:

Everything you can think of,including wasting ones time lowering the rep of the manufacturer

Like most others i got one of these with the camera.I must say, after living with various models of these cheap zooms for many years,i can't find one good thing to say about them at all.I went from older prime lenses to a kit zoom and for the next five years didn't get ONE outstanding shot-where i was getting some awsome images before.Since biting the bullet and getting some REAL lenses i'm now getting the good pictures again

Weight Speed Size

Weakness:

Build Quality Medicore Sharpness

I didn't expect much when I bought the lens, and have been neither dissapointed or surprised. It's fast, and I have not noticed any decline in sharpness at the edges of prints. I'm perfectly happy with it, it suits what I do with my EOS, and when it doesn't I get my FD gear. I would reccomend it to a casual photographer with limited need for a zoom.

Strength:

Fast focusing, Very affordable

Weakness:

Very plastic and cheap feeling

Decent little lens. It came with my first SLR purchase. I have since upgraded my entire system Except this lens. I wonder why? It''s plastic it feels cheap and it is the only lens I own that gets thrown around and treated like a non important part of my photographic arsenol. But it still works and for the going price for a Canon lens it''s an affordable (yet limitating) addition to any beginners or family photographers bag. I have blown close-up portraits up to 8X10 with little if any distortion at the edges using ISO 400 film. Also I won a photo contest that had over 1000 entries with a picture that I took from this lens.

Model Reviewed: EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 III

Strength:

It's lightweight, low price

Weakness:

Limited focal length range, cheap plastic construction, rotating front element, no USM, pretty slow lens (f4-5.6)

The only reason I have this lens is because it came with my camera. I suppose its a good lens for a beginner, especially because its cheap, but I imagine anyone concerned with taking good sharp pictures will outgrow this lens pretty soon. It feels very cheap (made of plastic), has a limited focal length range, and isn't very sharp. I think it would be better to save up a bit more money for a 28-105 USM.

Model Reviewed: EF 35-80mm f/4-5.6 III

Strength:

very light
better than a point and shoot

Weakness:

Poor focus, poor AF, plastic feel and plastic lenses

This lens came with my EOS 500, and altho good for a novice and starter lens, you would be better off investing a little more into a Canon 28-100 lens from the very start.

Strength:

Reasonable quality for price

Weakness:

Very plastic
Plastic mount

Hey this is no masterpiece of lens technology, and its no
good bagging this lens because you got it with your EOS body
I got one of these lens because I bought a couple of EOS500
cameras which I use for wedding photography ( I also replace
my cameras 2 years) but I do keep my 35-135 USM, 100 mm prime
50mm 1.8 and the 35-80 Zoom which takes fine photos, I have
never had any complaints from my clients and heck if I
ever get to the stage in my photographic career that I start
looking at photos through a loup or microscope I will
give the game away, I started when I was 15 I am now 57
years old and to me if a print looks sharp thats fine.
So hang on to your 35-80 zoom its not a bad bit of kit.

Strength:

- cheap
- fast focus

Weakness:

- plastic mount
- small aperture

This is the first lense I bought when I started learning photography. Together with my EOS 500, it is not too bad, at least when I consider its low price

But it is really just for beginer, do not expect any miracle from it.

Casual

Strength:

Quite sharp (for its price)
Reasonably fast AF even without USM
Small,lightweight
Flare resistant
Low distorsion compared to Canon 28-80

Weakness:

Small range (can be 105 at the end :-))
Small aperture
Rotating front element

A got this lens together with my EOS300. My only complaint is the small range, otherwise I'd keep it. Unfortunately 5.6 at 80mm is not too good for portraits. I prefer this instead of 28-80, however 28-105 USM is a much better choice, but for much more money.

Strength:

Comes with the EOS camera.
Light.
Reasonably Fast

Weakness:

Not sharp enough for enlargement.
Adequate for the casual photographer.
Sharpness not as great as some compacts! Like the Olympus Mju/Stylus!

Adequate but if you want real sharpness, get a proper Canon lens (or Tamron, Sigma), not one that comes with the camera!
