Strength:

1) Cheap
2) Light

Weakness:

1) Too Plastic
2) Image not sharp
3) F4-5.6
4) Slow

Might be a wonderful lens to bring along for trips, but hoping to get some good shots from it will be difficult because of it's limitation. Good for beginner, but will not be in any other photographer's list of owned lens.

Strength:

Lightweight
Focussing is rapid
Small filter thread

Weakness:

Not impressive as an SLR lens.
Not wide enough

The photos were reasonably acceptable.
Sharpness was adequate at the centre but the sides are a bit distorted.
Would satisfy many people but I would expect slightly more from an SLR lens. After all, there is no point getting a SLR if you can get the same result from a lighter and cheaper compact. Nevertheless, the lens comes free with the camera and I would advice people to get the 50mm 1.8 lens if they want more impressive results.

Weakness:

Lens quality

Can't fault Canon because it is a good deal looking at the price.
Most people will think that the lens is fairly good even though it is amongst the worse Canon lens available ( the 38-76mm one was probably the worse).
You can get fairly decent shots.
I prefer the tele (80mm) end to the 35mm end.
You will notice that resolution is fairly good at the centre of the picture and deteriorates quickly towards the periphery. I suspect the MTF curves dips steeply as they go out.
If you look closely, there is some distortion on your pictures. Probably caused by lens astigmatism (the lens were not constructed symmetrically, typical of low priced lenses).
If you like casual shots, this lens should be adequate . If you really want sharp and undistorted shots, you have to move on to another lens.

Beginner

Strength:

The pictures are crisp and clear.

Weakness:

The AF can be slow in low light.

This lens isn't bad for a beginner like myself. Until I get enough money for a better lens this will do.

CHEP!

Compare to my Fuji APS This looks great!
Then compare it to my OM-1 w/ a 50mm Zuko. The difference is clear as day.
I wouldn't try to waste slides film on it. It will work well as candid shots... don't waste expensive finegrain film with it.

Strength:

Small and light and reasonable image quality. No complaints unless your into big enlargements.

Weakness:

It's very definately a 'budget' lens. It's range is limited compared to other lenses that can be got for a little extra money.

A very average lens but for a very low price

Customer Service

When I dropped and broke my lens Canon where efficient about repairing it. IT cost almost as much to repair as to buy a new one but I have specific camera insurance so that wasn't a problem.
