TAking shots for fun, it is nice to find a zoom that operates as a prime without any major loss in quality. It sure simplifies carrying a lot of stuff when I want to enjoy the hike as much as shoot pictures.

Strength:

Very useful zoom range for weddings/receptions,
62mm filter size, 1:2 macro for closeups of ring/boquet shots. Light enough for travel.

Weakness:

Small aperture! Soft on the sides at macro.

Complements my 17-35 on wedding assignments. Perfect all-around lens.

Strength:

reliable, sharp focus, easy to zoom,

Weakness:

little tricky to put lens shade on,barrel wants to turn.

I use this lens every week or so for weddings and or conventions. Coupled with the N90s and SB28 I have dependable equipment that will readily adapt from churches, to garden receptions, to dimly lit banquet rooms; from 28mm to 105mm with ease and loosing nothing in edge to edge sharpness or color rendition.

I am completly satisfied. I was disappointed with both the 28-80 and 35-80. This lens is definitly a big step up in quality and performance! I took this lens and my N80 to Jamaica and got great colors and sharpness. I could only afford one zoom. After looking Sigma and others there was no question...it had to be the nikon. I have not been disappointed. Now I can't wait to try this lens out at Mardi Gras!!

Strength:

Attractive price, sharp, light weight, zoom range is suitable for outdoor, 1:2 Marco

Weakness:

Hood is little bit large, the length of the lens will be changed while the focal length is being adjusted.

It is a good lens for outdoor due to its zoom range and light weight. If you are the beginner, this lens must be your first lens. If you are the expert, this lens is your good partner!

Strength:

solidly built

Weakness:

not too sharp
vignettes with polarizer
heavy for it's size
not worth the price if you ask my advice

i really expected more from this lens..
the prints i got from the 28-80 that came with the f60 were not too good but the ones i get with this one aren't better..
i get better results at 28 mm with my ae-1 and a generic fixed lens.. i wish i could get my money back..
maybe i have a lemon...
it's funny that the 70-300 ed in my case is actually sharper than this one.. could someone explain this to me??

Customer Service

ok.. i brought back the 28-80 in order to get the 28-105

Strength:

Light in weight.
Easy to handle.
Compact.
Internal Focussing.
Greater movement for focussing offering a greater scope for critical focussing.
Reasonable price.
Comfortable Zooming.
Very good sharpness and crispness.

Weakness:

The filter position shifts while zooming. This is disadvantageous when using a polarising filter or a graduated filter.
Given this sharpness and freedom from aberrations, a maximum aperture of 2.8 would be welcome, as a wider aperture would help in blurring the background.

Very important lens for a Nikon user.
A must for a traveller.
A good buy for the price offered.
A deserving reward for the weight carried.
A great product from Nikon.
Would have preferred the same product with ED elements.

Customer Service

Never needed any.
I thank God for it.

I have tried 24-120mm zoom and was very dissatisfied with its results. I had to resell it within a week at a considerable loss.

35-105mm. was a good lens. But this 28-105mm is considerably superior.

Strength:

Good zoom range, reasonably well built, macro mode, sharp when stopped down, good price.

Weakness:

Serious vignetting when wide open at wide angle, not very large max aperture.

After doing a roll of film tests against a flatly lit background, I'm very disappointed in the vignetting. Even without a haze filter, you get bad vignetting at 28mm until stopped down to f/5.6, where it's moderate, pretty much disappearing at f/8. The haze filter (even the thin one, that doesn't allow you to replace the front lens cap) only makes it worse: terrible vignetting (and even slightly darker image with a bit of color shift) at 28mm & f/3.5, not disappearing completely until 28mm & f/11. (By terrible, I mean that in a 4x6 photo of a light tan wall, the corners are almost black, and the darkening doesn't disappear until about an inch toward the center of the print. By moderate, I mean that the corners are about a stop darker than the middle, with the darkening again disappearing about an in toward the center of the 4x6 print.) Alternatively, if you leave the lens wide open in low light, you get terrible vignetting at 28mm, moderate at 35mm, minimal at 50mm.
In short, 28mm is not really usable unless you're in bright light or pretty close with your flash or using FAST film. Even 35mm should have similar conditions, especially if you're using any filter on front. (Incidentally, I've never seen a lens with this kind of vignetting, from any manufacturer.)
The small max aperture makes autofocusing tricky in low light situations, with the on-board "headlight" focus assists on, for example, the N80 not very useful beyond about 10 feet. Also, if using it with an N80 or similar new camera with an LCD display superimposed inside on the viewfinder, the inherent dimness of this display aggravates the dimness of the f/3.5-4.5 lens, making even manual focus more difficult in low light situations.
All in all, a good lens for bright light photography, but with some serious shortcomings. Consider another lens or lenses if you do many wide-angle indoor shots using mainly the rather weak built-in flash, if you do wide-angle shots early or late in the day, or if you use slower speed, higher resolution film for wide angle shots.

Strength:

Well made consumer lens.
28-105 range.
Better that other consumer lens.

Weakness:

Not sharp enough.
Occasionaly hunts for auto focus.
Two filters at anything less than 50mm causes dark corners.

I was expecting a sharper lens than this, relying on Nikon reputation. Having resently stepped up to SLR from point and shoot cameras, I was expecting stunning results. This lens with my N80 produces pictures only marginaly sharper than my wife's cheap point and shoot.
