Strength:

Very good optical quality for the money. Also is light weight, which makes for a good touring lens!

Weakness:

Tends to have pincushion distortion at the lower focal lenghts, but for the money, I can overlook that!

A great all-purpose lens which performs admirably in most situations. This is a truly ecomical all purpose lens that is a great alternative to the AF-S series when cost is a factor. Enlargements are great to 16x20 with Fuji Provia-F 100. You will not be disapointed!!!

Strength:

usefull zoom range, very good sharpness, contrast low distortion and ofcourse the macro cap.

Weakness:

Everything could be better, but it would be nice if it was F3.5 all through the zoom range. The hood is very large!

A very usefull high quality zoom lens with very good optics and a very pleasing macro capability.Haven't seen any flare yet with the gigantic lens hood! The reviewer before me couldn't help himself from comparing it with a 50mm f1.8 and it didn't meet his demands and thus it got a undeserving low review.Nothing not even Nikkors AFS 28-70 can be compared with a good prime lens!Good primes like F50/1.8&F50/1.4 always beat zooms in term of sharpness, contrast and lack of distortion(actually 0%with these primes)! But then you don't have wide angle through tele range. So both choices are compromises;highest optical performance or a higher practicallity.when searching for high practicallity and very good optics for your Nikon F/N camera at a reasonable price then can't get around this lens!

Strength:

Very usefull zoom-range.

Weakness:

It is really not a pro-lens, cannot compare to prime lenses.
The use of a polarize-filter results in heavy vignetting at 28mm. Colors with pol-filter are shifted to magenta. I did not notice that with the 50mm prime lens (same film).
Sharpness and contrast cannot be compared to the 1,8/50mm prime.

I used the 28-105 on a journey in Egypt/Sinai and was rather disapointed with the results on Fuji-slide-film.
On my last trip on Teneriffa/canary islands I used the 1,8/50mm prime lens and had much better results in sharpness, contrast, colours and no vignetting with the pol-filter.
These pictures were good enough to sell some of them for professionell A4-Scans in best resolution.
I am rather disappointed with the 28-105. It may be good enough for negative-films for prints, but it is far from perfect for professionell slide-films for high-resolution-scans.

Strength:

Very good balance of weight, quality and price. Generally sharp stopped down 2 stops, but acceptable open to open+1 stop. Center is much better than edges. This seems to be a Nikon design point these days. Macro ok when subject is in center.

Weakness:

A little disapponted on the extreme ends wide open. But I had a 24-120mm and it was much softer in the center, but had almost as good of edges as the 28-105 at some focal lengths.

Overall, I like the tradeoffs much better than the 24-120. Also, F4.5 is really 2/3 stops faster than F5.6- not the 1/2 that most people think.

Good zoom lens to have with macro as bonus. I try to stop down, if possible to offset zoom quality loss. Use primes for ultimate quality and speed. Considering the cost, this is a great lens. Only a little more than the 28-80 all plastic lens with no macro.

Strength:

28-105mm zoom range.
f/3.5-4.5.
Size / Weight.
IF Focus.
Close-focusing (not macro) to 1/2 life-size.
Build has nice fit and finish.
Manual focus and zoom relatively smooth operation and quite well damped.
62mm filter size.

Weakness:

Vignetting at 28mm 3.5
Softness at zoom extreme ends wide open
Large lens hood
Front element rotates while zooming

Wanted a general purpose zoom for my N80. For those like me, that cannot afford the Nikkor 28-70mm 2.8D ED-IF AF-S, overall the Nikkor 28-105 3.5-4.5 is one of better rated "consumer" general purpose lens that's currently available for Nikon camera users. (See www.photodo.com "MTF" Tests, www.photozone.de "Lens Test Guide" and Popular Photography Jul 2000 Page 29)

I looked at the Tamron 28-105mm 2.8 but was TOO BIG and TOO HEAVY; plus cost of filters. Also considered the Nikkor 35-70mm 2.8, but I would really like my general purpose zoom lens to have be at least 80mm on the tele end. At the time I bought the 28-105 the new Nikkor 24-85mm 2.8-4.0 was not released. But considering the 28-105 smaller lens size and weight, cost and 62mm filter size (which is not only less expensive, but is same filter size as the 70-300mm) -- I still would most likely had chosen the 28-105.

As noted in other reviews, within its limitations it can produce very good results. I have been quite pleased with the images produced with the 28-105 using Kodak Royal Gold 200 and 400, and Kodachrome 200.

However, I sure wish Tamron would make a new AF version of their SP 35-80 2.8-3.8 lens.

Strength:

Inexpensive
Pretty sharp throughout range
Decent macro

Weakness:

Auto focus a little weak
A bit on the slow side
Vignetting at wider than 35mm

The strengths of this lens more than outweigh it's weaknesses. The vignetting I expected with a polarizing filter and although the auto focus is nice to have I got much sharper results using it manually (seems to be the case with most Nikon zooms).
Overall this is a great all-around lens with better glass than you'd expect for the price. Definitely worth upgrading from the 28-70mm if you're looking for a medium range zoom.

Strength:

1. focusing well damped in MF
2. fast IF AF
3. macro mode (with switch which requires you to change to macro when you focus too close - it could prevent accidentaly coming too close to the subject while using camera's build in flash and cause vignetting. ( I think it's smart Nikon's design)
4. quite fast ( variable 3.5-4.5 is no problem when using a camera's ring to select aperture -- it stays constant at whatewer you selected on the camera body even while zooming except at 4.5 or less.
5. portraits shot at 105 and the slides came out increadibly sharp

Weakness:

1. large front element not well protected by the barrel requiring protective filter which in turm may cause vigneting at wide setting.
2. in order to balance it well on let say n80 you need an extension grip -- otherwile camera tends to lean forward, no problem with F100 or F5.

Appears to be a great bargain lens with wide range and more than good optical quality.

Strength:

Very useful focal length range.
Sharp images.
Well built.
Macro

Weakness:

Large lens hood

A good all-round lens that you can leave on the camera and use for most of your daily photography needs. Almost as sharp as primes. The macro feature is very useful. Images are sharper than the Nikon 24-120. The Sigma feels much more plasticky and I was unimpressed with the images it produced. The only wish is that this lens was a little faster although it is probably fast enough for most situations. The lens hood is a little too big! In summary, this is a great lens for the money.
