Strength:

Nice range. Well built. Sharp. Good all-purpose lens.

Weakness:

Not very nice to manual focus with (very short throw).

I find myself using this lens more and more. I'm far from a professional, but so far I have been very happy with the results. I sometimes wish it was faster, but then I probably couldn't have afforded it anyway. All in all a very nice compromise lens given the price, quality and performance.

Strength:

Great all purpose lens for people on a budget. Lightweight, easy to use. Super sharp pictures under all conditions.

Weakness:

Nikon products have no weaknessses.

If you have any of the new line of Nikon bodies N50, 60, 70 or 90, and you can have only 1 lens, buy this one.

Strength:

Compact. Nice range. Very good sharpness and contrast for the price. Sold the 24-120 as this one presents better sharpness and more consistent performance accross the zoom range.

Weakness:

Could be faster.

Excellent every-day and travel zoom. Sharpness and contrast is impressive at this price range - consistently good results to 20x35 accross focal-length and apperture range (Best around f5.6 - 8). (Rating based on performance at this price point.)

Strength:

This a great little lens for everything from everyday photos to landscapes, to some simple macro work.

Weakness:

None at all. I have seen a couple of reviews with difficulty with the macro switch. Just make sure to focus on a distant object after your macro photo BEFORE trying to move the switch. This will move the focusing ring out of the macro zone.

A great lens for both the beginner and advanced photographer. I chose this lens over the Tamron because it was lighter and I was concerned with the Tamron's quality at the extremes of the lens. The Nikon lens has given me great pictures with both slide and print, and both landscape and macro. For a good single all around lens, or a first lens, you will have a hard time beating this one. Get this lens and all you will have to add is a long range zoom for the wildlife and sports photos.

Customer Service

Not needed. You can check my review of the F100 to see my lone experince with Nikon Customer Service. It was excellent.

Strength:

I bough this lens in March of '99 and have used it extensively since then. It's compact and lightweight and covers a great focal range.

Weakness:

No problems so far, but I wonder if the lens hood needed to be that big!

A relatively inexpensive lens that covers a much-used range of focal lengths. Yes, it's a little slow, but it will give you great results with a 100 ISO film like E100 VS or Elite Extra Color. And, if I'm packing light with just one lens, this is my first choice.

Customer Service

In 20 years I have only had one piece of my Nikon equipment cease working, and it was my fault!

Strength:

The weight is just nice, compact and easy to handle. The cheap 62mm filter is a bonus.

Weakness:

Slight vignetting when subject is too near (only during macro work)

I sold my Nikkor 24-120mm to get this lens. Right after I examine my slides, I knew that I made the right choice. Sharpness is better, easier handling especially when zooming in and out. The zoom ring is definitely smoother and well frictioned (no self zooming due to its weight). This is a very well thought design by Nikon. I also like the way the lens hood is fitted, just by a little click conformation. Macro function is a bonus although only 1:2. Sharpness is excellent at centre but decreases towards the edge. This lens is very handy for wedding. Love it !.

Strength:

Nice zoom range for travel. Fairly small and light. Handy macro feature.

Weakness:

I find it awkward to switch in and out of the macro mode.

An average lens in terms of sharpness and contrast. A nice range for travel....but something just seems to be missing from this lens.

Customer Service

Nikon customer service is expensive and indifferent. I suggest a good private tech.

Strength:

A very good all-around lens. Shot a cousins wedding recently with this lens, with fine results.

Weakness:

Get and use the hood on all lenses, but especially on wide range zoom lenses like this one, to reduce flare and improve contrast.

The corners are not real sharp in Macro mode, but hey, my 55 Micro-Nikkor, which is very sharp, has only one focal length, while this lens covers quite a wide range.

A very good advanced amature/low end pro lens. Probably the best all-purpose lens going, at least in the Nikor mount. The only "problem" is that I would like to see a faster 28-105 f/2.8-3.5 version!

Strength:

Well built. Smooth AF.
Very sharp and good contrast. Good bokeh.
Close focusing to 1:2 macro without attachments.
Good macro lens thats easy to use handheld.
Good weight balance on F100.

Weakness:

Rotating front with zooming.
Lens flare more than Canon 28-105mm esp shooting sunsets/ sunrise.

An excellent lens which is a steal for the money. Sharp , very sharp for a zoom at this price and class.
Highly recommended for Nikon users.
Internal focusing would be a nice improvement.
A very classy looking lens that is rather solid.
