Strength:

Great all around lens. I found it to be perfect for nearly everything I do.The lens does everything I want, and the macro mode is like having two lenses in one.

Weakness:

I would like a little wider shot than I can get sometimes -- 24mm, maybe? Of course, I'd like a little more zoom, too. Why can't Nikon make a 16-400mm 2.8?!

Like I said, a great all around lens. If you're just purchasing a body and need a great lens to go with it, this is it. Also a great in-between lens. It won't get *everything* you want, but it is great for 95 percent of the shots I take, and very few lenses will do that. Great closeups with a tripod. Watch, though -- sometimes saturation seems a little heavy.

Strength:

Excellent all around lens. The f3.5-4.5 is fast enough for most situations. Picture quality has always been excellent. Macro feature a plus. Lens is light enough to carry around all day with camera strapped to your neck (F-100). Extremely fast focusing with F-100.

Weakness:

Would have liked a constant 3.5 aperture. I often like to have a 24mm lens on the camera but the 24-120 is not the answer. That lens is too bulky and very slow.

Great all around lens with excellent sharpness and good color saturation. Lightweight and very fast focusing with the F-100 and N-70 cameras. 62mm filter size is an average size filter easy to find. If you want one all around lens, this one is it.

Customer Service

Nikon has usually been very good whenever I needed them. They were not needed for this lens however.

Plastic, plastic, plastic - what do you want for the $$$$?

It looks like the 28-70f3.5-4.5 is a tad sharper in my tests, but doesn't have the range of the 28-105mm. I think I'll stick with my 35-70mm f2.8 - metal, and sharp as a tack and I get a constant f2.8!

I'd been using the popular Tamron 28-200 for several years with pretty good results. However, in using it and my Nikon 24mm prime, I came to several conclusions. Number 1, 28mm wasn't wide enough for me. Second, I rarely shot longer than 100mm. Finally, when looking at my pictures I realized that the images from the Tamron were a bit dull compared to the ones I took with the Nikkor. So I thought about selling both my lenses and going with the new 24-120 from Nikon. But I read some mixed reviews on the 24-120... apparently the sharpness isn't great and there's significant distortion at 24mm. Plus it doesn't focus close like my 24mm prime does. For $500+, with big 72mm filters and no macro mode, I finally decided against it. I stuck with my 24mm prime for the wideangle shots and went with the 28-105mm for the midrange. So far the results are good. It handles well and is sharper than the Tamron. And the macro is a great bonus. I think people get a bit carried away with 5 star ratings... I give this one a solid 4. My main complaint is that Nikon needs to get off their arse and give us some consumer VR lenses, because I can't carry around a tripod everywhere I go. I have come very close to switching over to Canon several times solely for this reason. If the A2 wasn't 8 years old I probably would have. The announcements of the N80 and the new VR lens (that will probably cost about $2000 when it's finally available sometime this fall) have delayed that decision, but how about a 28-105 VR lens? I am so completely envious of Canon owners and their amazing 28-135 IS lens. Your time is running out Nikon.

Strength:

Lightweight, versatile, handy macro mode, sharp and contrasty with good color, inexpensive.

Weakness:

Some softness at edges, a little vignetting with polarizer. A bit slow, with f3.5 only up to about 35mm.

I bought this lens as a companion for my new F100 in March of 1999. I didn't have a lot of money left over, and it was relatively cheap, about $320. I was pleasantly surprised at the consistent quality of the pictures. Very contrasty and colorful, fairly sharp, especially when stopped down a bit. There is a little vignetting with a polarizer, but that might be due to the thickness of the filter I am using (Hoya). The macro function is great, I use it all the time. You can get within about 2" of the subject, and the sharpness is surprisingly good. This is not intended to be a professional lens, but I would rate it significantly better than the average consumer zoom lens. I would recommend it even to pros who need a small and lightweight all-purpose lens for traveling or other situations where you might not be able to lug your heavy artillery. Be sure to bring a tripod, though. The f3.5 is only available at the very short end. My overall rating reflects the fact that this is not a pro-quality lens, although it is closer than one might expect for the price. It is also fairly quick focusing on my F100.

Very sturdy lens, with an amazing close-up capability. Wide angle to medium tele in a very sharp and sturdy compact package.

Weakness:

Heavy and also very long to real macro close-ups. Corners in the macro mode are not among the best, and dont try to use the built in camera flash with the lens fully extended.

Realy nice lens with very inpresive performance with a handy macro mode. Try it with the HB 18 Lens Hood, you wont be disapointed

Strength:

- great travel lens
- macro feature much sharper than expected
- well frictioned zoom
- IF make focus speed reasonable
- very sharp through 40mm - 85mm range (tapering off at ends)
- 62mm filters not too expensive

Weakness:

- front rotates during zoom, but does not during focus, so filter adjustment is nessecary
- large hood (expected though for zoom range like this)

Its not as sharp as a prime, but were you really expecting that? For the price range its the best performing lens with a large zoom range you'll find. I think its sharper than the nikon 35-70 3.3-4.5 and is definately nicer than the 35-80 they make as well. Its a great lens for travel or when you can't carry many lenses. Perfect first lens, would recommend it over all others because it has a large zoom range is is more than adequately sharp for beginners or just casual photography, and lets you play with macro as well. I travel with this lens and the nikon 70-300mm 4.5-5.6D ED to cover all prime ranges, and at the cost of the lens not too worried about them being stolen. Maybe the happiest purchase I've made of a Nikon product, you'll be pleasently surprised as well I think.

this is a great all around lens. this is a very sharp lens. the 8x10 photo is still tack sharp & exihibited beautiful contrasting values; considering that the lens was at it's max focal length of 105mm f4.5. i hardly pick up my nikkor 24-120mm. the macro feature is to die for; it's not 1:1; but i think i can live with 1:2. one can still afford to buy a good uv filter & a lens hood because it has a 62mm front thread. let's face it, if you're looking for an all around lens, magnificent optics, incredible price-this is it! just buy it already-go ahead.
