Strength:

Inexspensive, lightweight, powerful range

Weakness:

NO

I recommend this lens if you can deal with the slow aperature. It is inexspensive, has ED glass, and manually focuses pretty good for a AF lens. Great range, and the pictures are sharp.
i sold mine, but wish I would have kept it.
Excellent all-around travel lens. To slow to use with converters however.

Model Reviewed: AF70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED Zoom-Nikkor

Strength:

The 70-300 is a good, versatile zoom for the money. You get what you pay for; no more. This lens is a good choice when weight is an issue (backpacking, travel).

Weakness:

Optically this lens is soft (all focal lengths and aperatures). Build quality is only average.

This is a good (not great) lens for the money. If you aren't too critical of image quality this lens represents a good value. This is not to say it's a poor lens; it isn't. Just don't expect too much. If you compare this lens to Nikon's pro-level ED zooms you'll be disappointed. Just think of it as a consumer-level zoom with ED glass.

Model Reviewed: AF70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED Zoom-Nikkor

Strength:

Feel was comfortable. Good price point compared to other Nikon lens.

Weakness:

Barrel moved to easy, slight touch would change focal length. AF drive was noisier than comparable Sigma lens.

Comparison of Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super with Nikon AF70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED Zoom-Nikkor. Took pictures with both Sigma lens and both appeared similar in detail. Pictures with Nikon lens of American flag showed white on flag to have red haze, Sigma did not. Sigma lens showed truer colors consistently. I bought the Sigma which also has macro capability.

Customer Service

Dealer was interested in comparison between Sigma and Nikon lens.

Model Reviewed: AF70-300mm f/4-5.6D ED Zoom-Nikkor

Strength:

I like the range and the weight, but that's about all there is to like.

Weakness:

Soft in the center, softer in the corners.

A nice lightweight zoom with an enticing range, but just average optically from 70-150, and below average from 150-300.
Believe it or not, the very cheap 80-200/4.5-5.6 blows this lens away at similar focal lengths.

Customer Service

Nikon service is expensive and indifferent. I recommend a private tech, unless under warranty.

Strength:

Good range

Weakness:

Would be nice to have lower F/Stops

I really like this lens. For the casual to intermediate shooter, this lens is a great travel companion. Nice and sharp, good range , light weight, and good glass. It is even a great lens, for the cost, for some weekend sports shots of the Kids,it is pretty fast. I would recommend it highly.

Strength:

Light weight
Good distortion control for a consumer 5X zoom lens
Sharp and accurate colour reproduction
Use of ED galss
Reasonably fast AF

Weakness:

Construction entirely plastic

This lens may not be the hottest performer, but if you do not want to hike or travel abroad with heavy lenses such as 80-200/2.8, your next best bet will be this competitively priced ED lens. It is certainly capable of giving very sharp and contrasty results when stopped down to f/8 or so.

Strength:

Sharp, cheap price, light, good zoom range

Weakness:

Slow auto focus @300mm,
Slow lens and a bit noisy

Great lens for the price. F/8 I find is the optimum preformance. I've got excellent photos up to 8X10 with Kodak Royal Gold 400. If you plan to use anything slower then suggest use a tri-pod.
If you can't afford a 80-200 f/2.8 ED then buy this one.

Strength:

Light weight, sharp photos, ED glass, inexpensive price for what ya get!

Weakness:

Gee, I cant say anything here.

I recommend this lens to everyone. It will please you! I have used it for people, animal and general photos, and am always delighted with the sharp and contrasty results. The zoom range is very useful, 70 for tight normal and the 300 will get you out there to touch that coyote or bird. On a sunny day, it works very well with the 1.4 extender too. Get this one and have fun.
