Strength:

- Build quality - Optics - AFS focusing

Weakness:

- Weight is prohibitive to being a general carry lens

As many others have already noted this is a beautifully crafted lens that produces stellar results. I would just caution that this is not a lens you can mount and let dangle from a camera strap for general purpose travel/sightseeing...if weight is a priority, go with the Nikkor 18-35mm.

Strength:

Fast....quiet...looks great through the viewfinder.

Weakness:

some distortion if you don't watch it.

I kept reading that this lens was as good as a prime.....believe it. I took it on a trip to Guatemala recently and it was always the THE lens when I reached in the bag. The contrast even on neg film is easily seen.Chromes are unbelievable.Another classic chunk of Nikon glass for the faithful.

Strength:

Vary sharp...even at 17mm on all f.stop outsatanding color redemptions High quality built and finish Minimum flare and distortion

Weakness:

Some minor slack/looseness on the zoom ring when zoomimg in and out.

This lens is 24MM to 52mm on my D100 and now became my standand lens 95% of the time.I love the size and wieght....it don't feel right when I have a smaller lens on the D100 maybe I just got use of the weight....not!, love the feel of the large rubber focus and zoom ring with vary smooth and accurate motion (see weaknesses). Test photos shows sharpness and color in par with prime lens...Now I know!!! I can't shoot without this lens, if it get stolen....I'll call B&H and order another the same day!!!

Strength:

Sharp Fast AF Build quality

This lens has a very fast autofocus due to the silent wave motor. Sharpness is quite good even at 17mm from f5.6. From 20mm to 35mm sharpness is equal to Nikon primes.

Speed, the auto focus is incredibly fast and quiet. Lightweight for what it is.

Weakness:

A great lense in every sense of the word. This lens was made to travel, there are limitless situations where this lense will fit the bill. You can leave everything else in this focal range at home. Fast, Quiet, Sharp on an F100 this is an unbeliveable combination.

Strength:

The ED glass elements produce beautiful colours. Having the 17mm comes in handy in tight interiors. The AFS motor is quick and silent, whereas the 20-35 is just as quick but noisy. Able to hold comfortably mounted on my F-80. Never encounted any flare or ghosting unlike the older 20-35mm2.8D which flares badly

Weakness:

None

A solid lens with great optical performance, fast and silent focussing, and a price to match. Have not regretted purchase. One look at prints from this lens and your sold. Have enlarged to 10x15inch on Portra 160 at Frontier Lab with excellent colour and sharpness.

Strength:

Seriously... really nothing wrong in picture quality from f/4 ->, very good even at f/2.8. Very good contrast and sharpness. AF works like a dream, deadly accurate and instant. Zoom&focus rings has the feel of a swiss clock. D-chip cooperation very good with a nikon flash. DOF is planar and symmetric, something that was surprinsingly enough missing on the sigma.

Weakness:

Actually only price. At f/2.8 maybe a little "oily" softness&contrast but this can be found even on most primes... Yep, even the AF-S is barreling @ 17mm but so far nobody has been able to make a wide zoom lens totally without this. I presume a perfect zoom would require every single part of the lens moving separately inside the lens and even have changing shapes of the elements...:-). Use shift primes / larger format for linear architecture... 77 mm filters aren´t killing in price but still three times the 52 mm prices...

Yep. I did the right thing selling the Sigma 17-35 mechanical AF version... The AF-S is heavy but well balanced on F5/F100, big in size but big in performance, expensive but well worth the money. Three times the sigma price but three times the product. This is like having 17, 24, 28 and 35 "AF-D" primes together. But not like the older professional AIS lenses like the 28 mm f/2.8. A lens for those who 1) has to get the shot and 2) at best possible quality. If you turn the 1 and 2 around, then you need - besides much more time - a non-mirror camera like a Mamiya M7 or Leica M6 etc for theoretically optimal wide-angle performance. No AF though... so forget about any moving targets. Compromises guys, compromises...

Customer Service

None so far. Maybe after swimming with it for moment...:-)

This is a real pro lens. I''''ve had the 20/f2.8, the 24/f.2.8, the 28/f2.8 and the 35/f2.0 prime nikkors and now, I have them all in one piece with the bonus of the 17mm. This lens is nothing but SUPERB!! Worth every penny. Bravo Nikon on this one.

Customer Service

Excellent, in Israel.
