Strength:

sharp 2.8 solid speed (auto focus) balance on F100 and F5 body Great if you have D1x of D1h since those cameras add a 1.5X to any lens that is attached to it. (In short it allows D1 users to be able to shoot wide.

Weakness:

prince (like all professional 2.8 lenses)

This is by far the best zoom lens I have ever seem come out of Nikon. There really is no flaw with this lens. The problems that haunt extreme wide zooms are not present here. Even at 17 mm at 2.8 the edges like the center are very very sharp. The same goes for all the other focal lengths. True that I have done a lab test of this lens, but the people who view the photos taken by photographers are not examining the photos under a lab testing condition either. The construction is very solid and made of all metal. In cold weather that could put some people off, but I would rather have a hard body rather than plastic that can crack. The auto focus speed is nothing short of amazing. I have not yet used a faster auto focus zoom lens by Nikon yet. This is on an f100 body so the speed may differ with other bodies.

Strength:

This lens is one of the fastest focusing lenses I have ever worked with. Add to that it''s whisper quiet focus, and this lens is indeed a very top quality choice.

Weakness:

Out of 40+ reviews, no one has commented on the lack of any hyperfocal markings. I have found I need to carry a hypoerfocal reference card with me for shooting critical landscape shots. This one item alone has made me choose a prime lens on a few occasions just to not have to deal with the hassle of that part.

This lens solves the problem of having to carry around all of those prime lenses for landscape shots. It is as crisp and sharp as everyone mentions. The weight seems heavy at first, but you quickly get used to it.

Strength:

Sharpness, coverage (the 17mm is incredible).

Weakness:

Big and heavy

I owned this lens first, before buying 28-105. I took for granted the sharpness of this lens. However, after getting the result from using 28-105mm, I really appreciate the sharpness of this lens. It is expensive, but it worth to the penny. If you are in the market, do not be hesitate to buy this lens.

Customer Service

Never had a chance to use this. Hopefully, I will never deal with Nikon USA.

Tendency to flare, a bit big, expensive (but quality always is)

Strength:

Exceptionally sharp; very fast; well made; quiet

Weakness:

Expensive; a bit bulky; large filter size

I expect to be perfectly happy with Nikon lenses and only blown away by the results from, say, Leitz or Zeiss glass. This one from Nikon blew me away, however.

it's expensive, but it's left me very impressed with the images it produces. It's a very useful range. It's good lens to combine with the D1 (which I occasionally covet), I would think

Strength:

Focal range, construction, fast AF

Weakness:

Bulky, not AF with N8008

Great lens, extended focal range, fantastic construction, perfect for indoor photos.
From 17 to 24 quality is more or less like prime lenses, then a little less sharp then 28mm and 35mm MF.
I used it almost always.

Strength:

I can think of enough superlatives to describe this lens. It rules. It's effectively a 25.5-52.5 on the D1, which makes for a good standard zoom.

Weakness:

EXPENSIVE.

If you shoot with a D1 beg, borrow, or steal to get this lens.

Customer Service

Haven't needed it.

quiet, super fast focusing, handling, optics are wonderful

Weakness:

pricing that is it. However if you want quality you will pay for it. Just watch for the vinetting at 17mm so work around that.

I just shot my first wedding with the lens primarily as my lens and the customers were excited about the results and so was I. The working space was a small boat with 71 people on it and this baby did the job!!!!!!
Wonderful for tight spaces, and of course landscapes.

Price

Ok It is expensive. But if you have to paly in this range your choices are narrowing. Any combo of primes will far exceed this price never mind be inconvenient. And the 20-35 is rare as hens teeth and running $1k if you find one new. So for the extra $450 you get the extra range and the silent wave which is incredible. Clean fast sharp. Can be difficult to find. If your looking send me a e-mail and I can give you a tip on where to buy these in USA bodies for $100-150 less than the New York guys.

Model Reviewed: AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED

Strength:

This is without a doubt one of the sharpest lens Nikon has ever put on the market. The light gathering qualities of this lens are remarkable and the image quality produced by this lens, I would say is comparable to what you expect to see from Hasselblad and Leica lenses. I have used Nikon's fixed focal length 20mm, 28mm, and 35 mm AFD lenses, and they don't compare to the images produced by the AFS 17-35mm ED IF Zoom. I have also used both Hasselblad and Leica equipment and this lens has nothing to envy, its Leica and Hasselbald counterparts.

Weakness:

In my opinion really none. But for some, its price, size and weight, may be seen as draw backs, but the lens' performance more than makes up for any of these perceived weaknesses.

Without question this is one of the finest lenses ever made by Nikon. It is a well made, solid piece of equipment, that appears to be designed to withstand the rigors of daily, professional use. It is a lens made with the professional or serious amateur in mind. The very qualities that make it a great lens, also make it somewhat expensve and heavier than the standard Nikon lenses in a similar focal range. However, the results it produces make it well worth the trade-off.

Customer Service

Have not had to use any to date, however, my past experience has always been that Nikon service has always been exceptional.
