Strength:

Good sharpness and colour reproduction. Good flare control. The constriction is OK. AF speed is fast and slient, but not as faster as AFS 28-70/2.8. VR really works very GOOD.

Weakness:

In my own observation, I found the first lens element's edge (i.e. joint edge between glass lens and lens case) is not finished very good. May be I am demanding too much.

My comments is only based on digital SLR, Fuji S2 Pro, not film SLR. Thus, I cannot make comments on distortion or real slide colour accuracy and saturation. Anyway, I bought it coz of VR. ISO adjustment of DSLR plus VR makes me leaving my tripod at home, reduce much weight burden. I bought it recently at HK$4000, a bit overcharge in my opinion. However, I guess the price may going down later when it is not too new to the market anymore.

Strength:

Vibration reduction (VR) technology and silent wave (S) focusing.

Weakness:

Very poor optically, perhaps the worst Nikon lens I have ever purchased or used. Hopefully, I just got a flawed specimen and Nikon will replace it.

I have just sent my specimen of this lens back to Nikon for the second time and asked them to replace it. The lens shows serious image distortion in the outer quarter of the frame when set at 24 mm and the lens shade fails to lock into place when bayoneted on the front of the lens. I ran tests of this lens comparing it to my "old" 24-120 which clearly show the problem. The lens produces somewhat soft images at other focal lengths as well.

Customer Service

Terrible so far. They failed to fix anything when I sent the lens to them the first time, including the lens shade problem.

Strength:

VR works great, Fast focus,

Weakness:

None found.

I received this lens about two weeks ago. Shot about ten rolls of Kodak E100 VS slide film while mounted on my F5 and was very happy with the results. Slides were very sharp. What took a little getting used to was the zoom and focusing rings are reversed from the old 24-120mm It focuses very fast and is nice for low light where a tripod can't be used.

Strength:

The VR works a treat, contrast and crispness are top notch throughout the range

Weakness:

None found yet. It does what it says on the box

My old 24-120mmD was a workhorse that was reshod many times. This new lens has exceeded my best expectations and is in a different class

Strength:

Versatility, useful VR function. AFS focusing (about time this made it in to consumer grade Nikkor lenses)

Weakness:

Not as sharp as other Nikkors I own or have tried. that right side softness - check your samples when buying.

Nicely built lens, balanced well on my Fuji S2. Unfortunately, it had a serious softness problem on the right side of the frame only, and therefore I ended up returning it. Trying to judge the lens independently of this problem is difficult. However, putting aside what I hope is an isolated problem this is a competent if unexceptional lens. It is not as sharp as my 18-35mm Nikkor, or my 80-400 VR overall. But you do get a lot for your money.

Strength:

VR it's very well well performing, no way to obtaining similar results without tripod, no matter what stellar performer lens you use. Great zoom range. Autofocus is precise

Weakness:

Nikon has changed ring position between zooming and focussing, it's a bit confusing on the field. Autofocus it's not so fast and frecise in low light condition (with D1 x)

Even if it's not a "fast" lens you can gain three stop with VR, I shoted 600 photo on the field with all the focal range and with speed as low as 1/8 s in wide angle and 1/15 on longer focal, all the photo are sharp ! no waiste of blurred pictures . The photo are all crisp judged at maximum enlargment of my D1x. This lense solved the problem of photographing in low light situation without tripod (like church). Flare is very well cotrolled, very godd color and contrast and crispness.

Strength:

Very sharp. VR works. Two ED & two aspherical (molded, not hybrid) elements.

Weakness:

None really.

I have only had this lens for about one week. So far I like it a lot. I have always been disapointed with zooms in general. I think this lens will change that. I had the 24-85mm AFS for a short while and I would say the 24-120mm AFS VR is better. A couple of the earlier reviews said it was not that sharp but I think they had bad samples of this lens or somthing. So far I think it is the best Nikon zoom I have had.

A wonderful lens. Produces excellent results. Nice colours, sharpness and contrast. VR works a treat. It is now my favorite zoom lens, well, maybe as the 20-35mm is also an awesome lens.

Strength:

Sharp optics. VR works as described.

Weakness:

Kind of pricey but you get what you pay for.

I have been looking for a lens with a bit longer reach than the "standard" zoom that you normally see out there. The 120mm gives me that. I have shot slides and prints with this lens and my N80 and I have been very happy with it.
