Strength:

Great optics, not to heavy, VR, ED elelments, great range.

Weakness:

Reversed position of the zoom and manual focus collars takes some getting used to.

This is a top notch lens! I have used the older (non AF-S or VR) version of this lens for a few years and this updated version is by far a better lens. I would go so far as to say it is right up there with the 35-70 f2.8D that I love so much (to short of a focal lenght on that lens). Great focal range with the added VR and ED optics will make this a Nikon top seller. Distortion is well controlled as well (not the case on the old version of this lens). Balances well with the F5 and the D100.

Strength:

Fast auto focus and VR works great.

Weakness:

Very poor optics (see above)

I tried two seperate lenses and both were defective. I took 30 shots are various focal lengths and f stops and compared the optics on a target to the original 24-120 D lens. On all shots, the new VR AFS was slightly clearer on the left, equal in the center, and VERY BLURRY ON EVERY RIGHT SIDE SHOT.

Strength:

VR, AFS, range

Weakness:

Reversed rings (this will really bug you), very slow, bulky

I had great expectations for this lens as an all-round lens for my F100 but was fairly disappointed when it arrived. The lens balances poorly on the camera and is overly large, especially when extended. Along with the reversed positions of the focus and zoom rings it just doesn't 'feel' right. I compared photographs of this lens with the excellent 24-85 AFS to determine which lens would be my 'standard' zoom and, as expected, found the corner resolution and contrast of the 24-120 somewhat lacking by comparison. In addition, the 24-85 zoom is almost a full stop faster at 85mm than the 24-120. The VR is a nice feature but not all that beneficial with the wide and mid-range zooms. The 24-120 feels 'clumsy' wheras the 24-85 feels 'quick and light'. Try them both and you will see what I mean.

Strength:

Very sharp, contrast, colors, VR works well.

Weakness:

Variable aperature from 3.5-5.6. However, If it were this focal lenght with a constant 2.8 in would cost a lot more. A 77mm filter size instead of 72mm would have been nice.

Unlike the reviewer before me I found this to be one of the sharpest zooms I have ever used. Maybe with this lens being so new there is some sample variation Nikon need to work on. But all in all, it is sharp with great color and contrast. The VR works very well. The zoom ring has just the right amount of stiffness. It balances very well on an F100.

Strength:

Good range [36-180mm for digital], VR, finally zoom the Nikon way [unlike the older 24-120 and 28-200]. Lightweight.4

Weakness:

Not very sharp [maybe mine was bad], not internal zoom. G lens design may bother some photographers.

Hatre to say it, but the lens did not live up to my expectations. Thinking it would be a nice general purpose travel/ day off lens. Maybe the one I got is bad, but the lens is not very sharp. The 28-70mm AFS [I know it is not a fair comparison] is much sharper. I ended up returning the lens.
