Strength:

Very Sharp, the tripod mount version auto focuses very fast better than the older ones, which I traded to get this one.

Weakness:

nothing wrong.

Absolutely Great lens and right on the price two, 3 of my friends who own Canon SLRs envy this lens because of its quality and price, none of them can afford Canon´s expensive counterpart.

Customer Service

Poor in Mexico city, I used it (not with this lens) with my first 80-200 f2.8 because I droped it.

Strength:

I have used the 80-200 f2.8 AFin several versions over at least ten years. The 80-200 f2.8d (push-pull) was really sharpe and I found fast to focus, but the lastest version w/tripod is even better!

Weakness:

ZIP!

The 80-200 f2.8 AF series of lenses as been my long-time favorite for live-performance music and to a limited extent, for close-in racing photography...the new AF-S is the best yet!

Customer Service

Tech support over phone is very good.

Strength:

Sharp, fast, nice feel to it. Bright and easy to focus. Really like the small tripod mount, compared with the prior model. It sits there out of the way until needed.

Weakness:

none

This and the other newer Nikon fast zooms have really impressed me. My prior experience with zooms was years ago. This lens is great for isolating people and landscapes. Even with a Nikon teleconverter (and a tripod!) this lens gives fairly sharp results. The auto focusing is quick enough for catching the expressions of humans, but not cats and others with fast reflexes.

Great glass! Fits well in the hand. Removable tripod colar! Silent focussing. I like the fact that I can still manually focus even in autofocus mode!

Weakness:

Nice glass! I was actually disappointed with the focus speed. I thought this bad boy would focus REALLY fast. Don't get me wrong, it does focus fast, but not really that fast. My 60mm macro focusses waaaaaaaay faster then the 80/200! well I guess that's because on it a zoom...

Strength:

Great fast lens. Extremely sharp.

Weakness:

Fantastic, but very heavy, fast lens. Incredibly sharp, especially in the F5.6-F11 range. However, other ranges are very sharp. Extremely fast focusing on either an N90s or F5. (Header page does not list F5, however, it does supply distance information to the Nikon F5 as well as the other cameras listed.) If you purchase one, make sure it is the later model with the tripod collar. Too heavy not to mount directly to a tripod. However, there are adapters made for earlier model without tripod mount.
Has a seperate turning focus and zoom rings. I believe older model without tripod mount had a push-pull zoom. Push-pull zoom feature sometimes moves when camera and lens are held facing downward.
Would recommend this lens to anyone who wants a great 80-200 fast lens.
New Nikon 80-200 lens has built in motor. Have not tried this one as of this date. Have talked with a few people who have the newer S lens and they like it. However, two people stated it was not as sharp from edge-to-edge as this lens. (Why? I don't know. I thought they both used the same optics. I may be wrong.)

This lens is extremely sharp throughout its entire zoom range. Contrast with this lens is great. This is the older "one touch" version of this lens.

Weakness:

None in 7 years.

An indispensable lens for sports action photography. Extremely sharp. Buy this.
