Strength:

Fast 2.8 aperture, really sharp results, solid quality feel, one touch focus/zoom ring.

Weakness:

Heavy, a real handful with the D1x. Mine is the type with the one focus/zoom ring and no tripod mount. Not the quietest AF in the world.

Great lens. Worth the money for the sharpness and colour. Takes some getting used to the weight dangling from your shoulder but does a superb job.

Customer Service

Only had to use them once and found them prompt and reliable.

Strength:

Excellent sharpness, build quality and focusing.

Weakness:

Perhaps a little heawy. Good for work a little workout whilst enjoying photography.

I am using this lens with the Nikon D1 along with the Nikkor TC14E teleconverter and the Nikkor 17-35mm AFS IF-ED lens. What a setup.

The 80-200mm AFS lens is lightning fast and delivers the image tack sharp, everytime. Due to the 9-bladed aperture, out-of-focus areas are rendered smoothly from corner to corner - very impressive, and only seen on 9-bladed lenses.

Although this lens is a bit heavy, one quickly gets used to it. I don't own a tripod myself but have would lots of useful techniques when it comes to handholding this one.

At first, I bought the 80-200mm AF-D version, but switched to the AFS version because of chromatic aberations (purple fringes in contrast areas). This may be more visible on digital SLRs such as the D1, D1x and D1h but I couldn't live with it.

I would recommend this lens to anyone getting into photography. Some of the best money I've ever spent in my life on hardware. That goes for the D1 and the 17-35mm AFS lens too.

It is definately a lens you will never regret to own! Wish I could have rated 6 stars + thumbs up.

Strength:

*Super-fast, silent autofocus
*Beautiful out-of-focus areas at f/2.8 make subjects stand out
*Excellent focus tracking for sports and action
*Great all-purpose zoom for photojournalism

Weakness:

*Tripod collar could be a bit more flexible, but that's being picky

I haven't regretted my purchase of this lens for one moment. Many of my most beautiful images were made with the 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S -- almost effortlessly, I should add.

In books and magazines, pros are always suggesting that amateurs can make great pictures with any lens. Meanwhile, those pros are making great pictures with every click of the shutter because they own lenses like this one.

This is the ONLY investment worthy of working professionals needing a zoom telephoto. Photojournalists heed this review!

Takes the place of quite a few of the prime lenses

Weakness:

NOne no for.

Even thought lens is very heavy, especially after trekking around most of the day, it is without a doubt indespencible in the field. It has lightened my camera bag in that a few other lenses are left at home. Optics are great and autofocus is plenty fast enough when needed.

Strength:

The best lens I own. It is heavy but manageable, it is sharp at all apertures, build quality is superb and it functions just as it should.

Weakness:

None--weight is a problem carrying it on dayhikes but I discovered LowePro Street and Field and that problem is gone.

Absolutely great lens. When I first bought a zoom telephoto for my N90s, I bought the 70-210 and thought I was happy until I tried one of the 80-200 on my camera courtesy of my friendly camera store. I had to have it and have not regretted the rather steep price one bit. It is a true pro lens in all respects.

Incredible clarity and versatility.

This lens is dramatically better than the 70-210 that I replaced with it. The only drawback to this lens is the weight and the price but the results are well worth the money and the pain of carrying it around.

Strength:

Incredibly sharp and when attached to the F5 the combination actually seems to get lighter!!

Weakness:

None.

The best lens I own. When mounted on the F5 the balance is superb and doesn't actually feel very heavy! Thinking about the AFS version, but this one is so good and the AF is probably as fast as I actually need, so I can't justify spending nearly twice the price for a fraction of a second faster speed. Plus I also quite like the idea that there ISN'T a motor in the lens that gives the potential to go wrong. One of the main reasons I chose Nikon over Canon in the first place!

Customer Service

None needed so far. I hear that Kino in the UK is not so good, but I would recommend buying and dealing with Grays of Westminster London, the deal exclusively in Nikon products and their service is second to none.

This lens is fast!! I am concentrating on shooting high speed sports--this lens gets it done.

Weakness:

Lens is heavy and probably requires mono/tripod for most applications. Transport is an issue unless you take a large bag.

I use this lens with an F100. This combination is awsome. Have also used a Nikon 1.4x teleconverter with this lens with excellant results.

Tack sharp. Very Fast and well balanced. The tripod mount is great. Perfect for portraits and sports/nature shooting. You can shoot this lens wide open or stopped all the way down. Great results everywhere.

Weakness:

ZERO

I use the two touch version of this lens. It replaced the push pull. I use it on my F5 and N70. Due to the weight of the lens I recomend you use a monopod. The addition of the S-wave version of this lens has driven the street price of the non S wave down to the $ 800 range. No better 80-200mm F2.8 is avalible in this price range.

Strength:

Its speeed 2.8 is what I need especially when using slower ISO film! Its speed of focus - attached to my F100 is as fast as I have wanted an AF lens to be. It is beautifully built too.

Weakness:

It is a big and heavy lens to be carrying around (you may have to reassess your camera bag). In terms of quality there have been no problems.

If you want top quality glass, speed and great build quality in a lens you simply cannot go past this beauty. It IS expensive, but then ultimatley you pay for what you get and with this Nikkor you do get a lot of lens!!
