Strength:

-solid and "smart"
-super sharp in all range
-balances well with camera
-standard 77mm filters

Weakness:

-no tripod mount

If you can find one of this masterpiece used, it's a bargain. It is actually one of my Nikon's favourite: sharp, fast, almost no distotion, very good color saturation. Old "screw" AF works quiete good even if not superfast.

Strength:

SHARP!!!

Weakness:

tripod mount to close to lens mount.( see below)

bought this lens after hearing so much about it and desire to own it. indeed superb in all aspects: construction, image quality, finish...so on. except one point: the tripod mount is too close to the camera and will scratch your battery grip if you are using bogen self lock kind of quick release. love the lens but hardly use it as too heavy to bring around. do get me wrong! this lens has good weight to balance a camera and feels good to hold, but if you are not shooting pro and think that you want to have top notch picture quality and want to bring this baby around, the weight and size will soon become a haunting question at the back of your mind each time you are going out.no to forget the attention that you will be getting when using this baby. now use it only for indoor potrait shoots. good portrait focal length and constant aperture great for setting studio lightings

Strength:

1.Sharp
2.Nice built
3.Constant aperture 4.Tripod collar
5.Auto/Manual switch
6.'Internal focus'

Weakness:

1.May be tad bit heavy for some but it is fine with me.
2.The internal focus design is not of a true IF design. Then again, Nikon doesn't state that it is anyway. 3.There is slight light fall-off at f/2.8.
4.Rather expensive.

This lens is one of my favorite lenses. It is tack sharp and very durable. It is my bread and butter lens that I use for most of my work. I am a P.J. for my local university paper and I use this lens most of the time. The fast aperture is superb for sudden change of lighting that I encounter very often i.e. from outdoors to indoors. When I am not out shooting for the paper, I do some nature work on my own and although the range is a little short, I manage just fine by getting as close to the subject as possible. For that extra reach, I am considering the Kenko Pro 2X or Sigma 2X EX teleconverter as I have heard good reviews about them and this lens. I have no regrets at all buying this lens.

Customer Service

Haven't used them to service any of my equipment but they were very pleasant and helpful when I called for questions.

Strength:

Very sharp & fast
Very well built & tough

Weakness:

Heavy but expected for an f2.8 and metal construction

This lens is awesome, photos are sharp even at
widest aperture (f2.8). Compared to others the
built quality is first rate and as tough as a
tank. Well worth the expense if you are serious.

Strength:

Sharp, excellent contrast, f2.8 constant, tripod collar, professional built like a tank!

Weakness:

Tripod collar too close to the camera body used with an F5 on a tripod but this is no real weakness.

I love this lens, it's bright, well built and crisp sharp at most focus lengths. This is what you call a professional lens. Yes it is heavy and expensive but it's pure quality compared to other (cheaper) zoom-lenses. Good work!

Strength:

Excellent quality and ruggedness.

Weakness:

Had to go through a few to pick a somewhat good lens because it had defects with them. There were scratches and pits in the lens.

This is a top quality lens that's heavy and rugged. It takes sharp pictures even with the TC14e teleconverter. I'm amazed at the detail this lens is able to pick up compared to my Quantaray 75-300 lens. This lens is in a class of its own.

Customer Service

very responsive but never had to send this lens in.

The Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S Zoom-Nikkor is an excellent lens!

Handling is fast, the AF is quick in tracking and very quiet. Looking trough the lens is a real pleasure.

This lens will open many new ways in which your creativity will flow.

Strength:

Optics housed in a tough body
Built to withstand the elements
Limit/full switch is a nice feature to have when working within limited range and saves on battery consumption
Nice krinkle finish to lens. Love the textured, rubberized ridges on the focus and zooming rings makes it easy to hold and turn.
Manual/Autofocus Switch on lens nice feature to have when fine tuning the focus.
Like the two ring design one for focusing other for changing zoom
No zoom creep that is common with the push pull turn design.
Circular polarizers can be used without
rotation
Sturdy, nicely designed tripod mount, can be rotated without being detached
Tripod mount better design than AF-S version
Holds its fast f2.8 constant lens aperature over the entire zoom range
3 ED Glass elements contribute to high resolution images
slightly lighter than its AF-S version
Bright Image in Viewfinder!

Weakness:

Non-detachable tripod mount, kinda sits close to the body
Lens is a bit loud on the N80 but almost as quiet as the AF-S version on the F5 and F100

Bottom line this lens is in a class all by itself. When comparing pics shot with the Nikkor 28-105 you can see a real difference in the quality of the prints. The color saturation, resolution and contrast of the prints is top notch! When I first looked through the viewfinder of my N80 with this lens attached I was overwhelmed by how bright everything looked. I was even more struck when I got my first pics back from the processor and showed them off. I am not a professional photographer but this lens and Nikons excellent matrix metering makes for some superb pictures! The ED glass and their ideal placement in the lens corrects for chromatic aberrations inherrent in telephoto designs something lacking on most consumer grade telephotos and zoom tele lens. If you don't need the AF-S version and want to save $500-$800 you should take a close look at this lens. As I stated earlier this lens attached to an f100 or F5 is much quieter and I suspect it has something to do with those cameras superior autofocus design. The noise in the N80 is acceptable if your not out shooting in situations that require you to have a quiet lens. The N80 is sturdy enough to support the weight of this lens too, afterall it has the same Nikon F mount right?
Overall, I am very impressed with this lens, its design and the superior quality of the pictures. If your looking for an outstanding telezoom that is on par with fixed aperture prime lens then check this one out. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

Strength:

Lightning fast focusing, and silent of course. Very sharp and built very solid.

Weakness:

It’s very heavy, but you get use to it.

It’s a killer lens for any one who shoots sports, it’s a must for the bag, a bit high priced but worth it for the quality of build. Mounted to my F100 it makes my camera feel like a toy, the way the lens is built with ample room to grip for focus, and the automatic manual override is a dream. And lets just face it, with a 77mm front end, this lens just looks sexy ;-)

BUY it you will not be disappointed !!!
