    Strength:

sharp, contrasty pictures and sturdy make $300 from the Ebay is a real steal. I love ebay

    Weakness:

    none yet

I have used this lens to shoot 2 rolls of Kodak Supra 100. The result is amazing. Resolution is incredibly high and color is natural and accurate. It's much better than my Tamron 24-135 which I am trying to sell.

    Strength:

really sharp and contrasty and well built ! very good image quality but not with sun/light in front

    Weakness:

prone to FLARE ! close focussing ONLY 0,5m slow and noisy AF (CANON EOS)

The weak point with this lens is FLARE ! This means that sun hidden by thick clouds decreases contrast as you never would expect !! >slides go to bin. Regardless this this zoom can compete with primes when stopped down in case of sharpness and contrast. Canon users should get 20-35 USM !

    Strength:

    Optics, build, operation, value.

    Weakness:

Very very slight. Lens-based AF motor noisier than comparable Canon USM. AF slightly slower than Canon USM also. But these are not critical factors!

Author is returning to serious 35mm analogue still photograpy after lengthy lay-off. Thus far, only two rolls Fuji NPC 160 pro neg - processed through Fuji Frontier lab - mainly colourful outdoor scenes, using Canon EOS 50E c/w Tamron SP AF 20-40. Impressions: "voluminous contrast, rich colour (ever so slight tendency to saturated warmth), excellent resolution, acceptable distortion at 20mm end" Zoom lens quality appears to have come a long way indeed. Engineering and R&D by Tamron is worth respecting. In a few days another Tamron SP lens will be arriving: SP 90mm f2.8 macro (rumoured to be razor sharp). Will report back to forum in due course. Reasons for not buying genuine Canon lenses? Robust Australian pricing, extreme pettiness in charging extra for some lens cases and lens hoods (try Aust.$60 and more for a piece of plastic after having shelled out Aust.$1000+), evidence that some Tamron SP lenses more than hold their own (which, now, appears to my eyes to have been proven). However this will not prevent impending purchase of Canon 70-200 L zoom. Overall I ''d recommend the Tamron SP 20-40 without hesitation.

    Strength:

Very solid and well built. Good handling & size, balances well on my Nikon F100. Sharpness and contrast are of first order, from center to corners when stopped down to f/5.6. Colours are excellent, as usual in my opinion with Tamron lenses. Autofocus is fairy quick and responsive.

    Weakness:

A bit of distortion at 20 mm setting, some tendency to flare but not bad overall. Some field curvature, barely noticeable, affects colours and highlights in corners.

For the price, a convenient lens, well worth the effort. Good results are achieved through all focal lenghts and apertures (f/2.8 is perfectly usable too). Excellent handling makes this lens a good choice for travel pictures when you want to carry two or three long lenses too in a bag.

    Strength:

Beautiful contrast and color. Tested it wide open at 20mm and 40mm. Excellent sharpness even to corners, very small vignetting at 20mm wide open. It is flawless at 28mm F5.6 to F8. With lens hood, flare is very well controlled when shooting into the sun.

    Weakness:

Slightly heavy, expected for the amount of glass. Slight barrel distortion at 20mm. Goes away at 24mm or higher.

I found the contrast and sharpness, even wide open to be very good and it's half the price of the Nikon 20-35 F2.8. I shoot slide and sharpness and accurate color rendition is important to me. This lens does the job for me. Try not to use for architecture at 20mm, or don't get the building close to the edge of the frame. I am very happy with it. Tamron has a $100 rebate on it now which makes it even more appealing in price.

    Strength:

The color rendition and sharpness of this lens is quite good. Great performance to price ratio and use 77mm filters compare with the more expensive 82mm on Sigma's 17-35

    Weakness:

The focusing ring is a little light in manual focus.

If you need a ultra wide angle lens this is a good choice compare to the ultra expensive Nikon. Photodo web site rate this lens better than the Nikon, Canon or the Tokina's version. Save your money on other equipment unless money is no object to you.

This is the third Tamron lens I bought, but sorry to say that the optical performance is not as good as I expected. May be the other two are too good. I bought this lens (second hand) three months ago, I will say that 5R print is the biggest you can have. After writing about the drawbacks, there are still some good things about the lens. The focal length range 20mm-40mm is very useful, I personally think it is even better than 17mm-35mm, since I find it difficult to compose a picture by using a 17mm lens (I used to have a Sigma ultra wide angle lens, but have forgot about the spec). This 20mm-40mm lens together and my 70mm-210mm F2.8 Tamron is my favorite combination when going outdoors. Among the three Tamron lenses I have, this lens has the best mechanical design - internal focus, robust, and it is quite compatible with my insertion filters (Cokin), no black corner is observed even at roughly 22mm focal length. I have experience with a Tokina zoom, black corner will be observed in 28mm when insertion filter is used. The rating should be closed to 4 instead of 3

    Strength:

Sharp, contrasty, good colors. Solid but light for such a fast lens.

    Weakness:

None, really. I like this lens.

This lens is one of my favorites, very sweet. I use it alot for landscapes and architecture. I love Canon lenses, but for the price, this one kicks the hell out of the Canons. Watch out for flare at the wide apertures when using a polarizer. One of the reviewers complained about distortion at 20MM but what do you expect? Some of the other Tamrons leave alot to be desired but this one is a real winner.

    Strength:

Great wide-range travel lens, very sharp and contrasty. Robust contruction.

    Weakness:

Flare, flare, flare... especially at wide end. Here prime lenses rule.

A wonderful travel lens. Great for fine-grained transparencies... but beware of large patches of bright sky. It's very prone to flare, the only real weakness I've seen.
