Tokina AT-X 242 AF 24-200mm f/3.5-5.6 35mm Zoom

Tokina AT-X 242 AF 24-200mm f/3.5-5.6 35mm Zoom

DESCRIPTION

The AT-X 242 AF is the first lens to start at 24mm and zoom all the way to 200mm, and is currently the widest zoom range available starting at 24mm. It is constructed using a chrome plated brass mount plate and a combination of aluminum and composite lens barrels to reduce weight while maintaining strength and durability.

Strength:

I''ve only had this lens for a few weeks so can''t comment on all the particulars, but I do have an experience which diserves mentioning. About a week after I got it, I was at a car dealership with a friend. I was waiting on the showroom floor (concrete) and decided to sit in a new volvo to pass time. I set my n90s (with mb10 bottom) with the tokina 24-200 lens on top of the car and got in. when I closed the door the camera slid off the top of the car and hit the ground lens first. Imagine my shock as I got out of the car and saw glass all over which ended up, thankfully, to be form the totally imploded skylight filter. after prying the filter off (the filter threads of the lens were undamaged) I shot the remainder of the roll, since the camera and lens appeared functional. The images were indistinguishable in sharpness from before the accident. I could hardly believe that both the lens and the camera could survive a 4 foot fall to pavement, let alone suffer absoutely no discrnable damage. I think this speaks highly of the lens craftsmanship.

Weakness:

fall off when the lens is at 24 mm. I''m catching the edges of the factory lens shade at 24mm.

Remarkable lens for it''s range and durability.

Customer Service

Don''t need. even from the 4'' ground fall.

Strength:

------- Using pelicula of 400 ASA, with quality you can cover all the situations. the construction is excellent the focus with my F90X is fast and the very good results. Attention, to total opening in 24 mm, vigneting much. But the contrast and resolution are very well.

Weakness:

Flare, vigneting.

---- I dedicate myself normally to the photo news article, and used Tokina ATX.PROII 28/70-2,6/2,8. But in news article and if this great variety is fast makes lack of objectives, for that reason buy the Tokina ATX 24/200.

Strength:

Very good balance on my N90s. Great light gathering even for a 3.5-5.6. Good grip on the zoom ring. Lens hood seats very firmly. Locks very firmly to the camera body.

Weakness:

Front lens cap is very secure but also very difficult to get off. Latches difficult to find by feel. MUST BUY THIN PROFILE FILTERS to prevent vignetting. EXPENSIVE at 72 mm size. Takes a little practice to get the filters started on the threads.

If I could only have one zoom lens, this is the one! I wanted a lens I could use on my F3HP but mostly dedicated for the N90s. I can''t force myself to take it off the N90. I feel there was a very good balance of use of metal and plastic in this lens to make it a quality lens and keep it affordable at the same time. I don''t care about the exta weight the metal adds as I am used to the F3HP with the MD-4 and a 35-105 zoom or the mammoth 70-210 f2.8 zoom. I feel if I want a lighter camera than this I can resort to a P&Shoot. The focus is good and clear, but not as fast as Nikon lenses. The manual focus works well when I use the in focus indicator in the viewfinder. The zoom is very firm perhaps even a little tight at the 24 setting, but mostly smooth with just a little notable "cammming" of the inner works early in the zoom from 24. I do allot of sunset and sunrises. The saturation of the color always amazes me. I am used to using a fixed focus 28mm or 35-105 zoom with the F3, I was leary of using this lens for low light, but as long as I match the film to the lighting I am expecting I am not disappointed.

Strength:

Wide zoom range with sharp photos at all focal lengths.

Weakness:

Slightly heavy.

This is lens for every photographer, the wide zoom range covers most of the needs, and photos are sharp and colors are rich at all focal lengths. Good build quality so it''s slightly heavy.

Strength:

Good build Sharp, color and saturation Very good AF

Weakness:

None that I have found

This is one great lens. Sharp, good color and saturation. The AF on this lens when used with a Canon D30 is as good or better than the Canon USM lenses. Very well built and smooth controls.

Strength:

Sharp, excellent quality.

Weakness:

Slow focus, heavy, f/3.5.

This is my first lens. Its is a great lens for sunny days and zoom photography. The finish is really good. I would not hesitate in buying another Tokina lens. The rear and front caps are of good quality. Most people say that this is a great travel lens because of the zoom range. However, I find that the apertures are not big enough. I needed another lens where the f stop went up to 1.4.

Strength:

Metal barrel, solid feel (except the MF ring), good range from 24-200. Use of SD adn asperiscal glasses.

Weakness:

Zooming mechanism too tight, more expensive than Tamron, much heavier and bigger, slightly worse color and contrast than Tamron, MF ring rotates during AF, bigger size filter.

I don''t really own this lens. I borrowed one from my friend and used it with my existing Nikon film gears (F2AS/F3HP/F4E). Here are some of the experience to be shared: 1. Good handling! Lens barrel is made of metal that gives a rugged feel except the hood and the manual focus ring - which I think is too light and loose to me. Because I''m using the lens with my F2 and F3 and doing manual focus all the time, I reallly don''t like the feel. 2. The zooming mechanism is a bit too tight such that when I zoom, I can feel the movement between the lens and the camera body (mount) specially on my F2. Hope you understand what I mean. The good news is when the lens body is extended towards its 200mm end, there is no loose gaps between barrels and the feel is solid. 3. The lens coating seems to be quite good but not as good as the new Tamron 28-200 XR version I have. And of course the Tokina is much more bigger and heavier than the Tamron. 4. Due to the small aperature design, the viewfinder is a bit too dark especially in indoor environment and makes MF more difficult. 5. Now the most important thing is its AF speed. I personally believe that it''s very reasonable when using the new Nikon bodies like N8080, F100, F5 and D1X/H ... However, it is quite slow with my F4 and it keeps on hunting. It is also noisy and the focus ring rotates during AF. (the Tamron XR also rotates but not as noisy as the Tokina) 6. Comparing the Tokina to the Tamron XR used with my D30, I''m very satisfied with the Tamron which gives very reasonable sharpness and contrast. From the results of Tokina, it seems that the sharpness is equally good but the color is not as saturated as the Tamron (this is my personally feeling). The distortion at 24mm is also quite noticeable. I like the 24-200mm range better than the more popular 28-200mm like the Sigma, Tamron and Canon. But if you are going to use manual focus most of time, you may need to reconsider the bad MF ring feeling. Besides, I found the Tokina sometimes cannot focus at infinity (from what the split image focusing screen tells me). Those who want to take a closer look at this lens, here are 3 pictures showing the Tokina at its short end, long end and with hood mounted. Hope they help. http://www.pbase.com/image/597050 http://www.pbase.com/image/597051 http://www.pbase.com/image/597052
