Strength:

3D matrix metering is very accurate.Auto focus is reasonably fast for most situations. Illuminated focus pts are excellent aid. The design and build are solid. Weight is excellent and significantly lighter than F-5

Weakness:

Lack of mirror lock up.

First, the comments expressed in these reviews are extremly helpful and contain a lot of very useful information for prospective buyers who like me are not professionals. The F-100 is a tremendous camera. The build and ergonomics are excellent. The F-5 is a truly great camera but, even with its superb RGB Metering, is starting to show its age. The weight and illuminated focus pts in the F-100 are just two examples of improvements made in the past 4 years. I just returned from a trip to Northern Arizona and the rugged country of the Pertified forest and Painted Desert. The F-100 handled everything with ease and allowed me to be a better photographer than I am. The pictures, with a variety of films and lenses, are sharp and correctly exposed in very difficult lighting conditions. This is a camera that has capabilities that I am just starting to really use. I have an upcoming trip to Cancun and some Mayan ruins in the jungle and I have absolutely no worries about the camera being able to handle the environment I will be encountering. The camera and accessories are expensive but quality costs. The balance of the camera with lenses is excellent with the MB-15 Grip. Both the Nikon F-5 and the Canon 1-V may be better camera's but are more expensive, especially the Canon when fitted with the Power booster. Also, as a non-professional, i did not realize that the Canon 45 pt focusing system would not be fully operational with consumer lenses that were slower than F2.8. The F-100 is easy to use and works as advertised. This is my first Nikon but will not be my last.

Strength:

Not many, for what I had to go thru with the camera, after two rolls of film; the mirror locked up and focusing screen with it! Be cautious who you buy from and the method used to ship!

Weakness:

From my experience with the F100, the mirror and focusing screen

Has anyone else had a problem with this so-called 'professional' (top of the line) model?

Strength:

I love my F100. 3D matrix metering is great, as is the spot meter which I use regularly. You can't go wrong with this camera. Also, it's much lighter than the F5 which is why I bought it and not the F5 (try lugging that around all day with the 80-200 F2.8D!).

Weakness:

None

You just can't go wrong with an F100.

Strength:

*Great design and user-friendly controls
*Fast autofocus, accurate metering
*Solid build and feel, fits the hand like a glove, lighter than the F5

Weakness:

*Viewfinder shows only "96%" instead of 100% of image recorded on film

I fell in love with the F-100 the moment I laid eyes on it. And once I held it, there was no letting go - it fit perfectly in my hand. This camera truly inspires you to go out and shoot photographs! It's expensive, but for those who are serious about photography, the F-100 is worth every penny.

Strength:

Great Nikon options; grips, flash, lenses, prisms, PC connect+SW. Excellent AF speed, shutter speed. 5-point or manual focus, auto AF. Intuitive controls layout. Bracketing and muliple default selection programming is a +. Right size and weight, good balance, rugged, durable construction.

Weakness:

No built-in mechanical view finder curtain which I dearly love in my N90s, it saves me back-lit streaks and other slide killers, clunky depth of field action - scares my little birdie friends away at key moments.

Have had this model for 6 months and 50+ rolls of print/slide/B&W and IR stock, with spectacular photographic results. Gained first national publishing and award recognition with this machine. Chose this over Cannon and Minolta due to human interface design, and over 645 MF due to all the flexibility and reasonableness of cost vs MF. Retired my trusty, reliable old N60 and Pentax K1000 in favor of the F100.

I'm hoping that Nikon will find a way in 2001 to design in 1/12000 shutter speed, a fix for that clunky depth of field feature, and by all means put the darn view finder curtain in!

I still love my Nikon though, and trust me, I'm taking 100 rolls of pro film to run through it for Hawaii this July!

Strength:

- Well-built
- Weighty
- Fast autofocus
- Very accurate metering, including Matrix
- Comfortable
- Complete viewfinder information

Weakness:

- Loud depth-of-field preview (sometimes I think I've hit the shutter release accidentally).
- AF-C/AF-S/M switch is too small and a little hard to use.

This is a fantastic camera body. I moved up from an N70 and really appreciate the improvements. I can't adequately express how much I enjoy using it. I have done significantly more photography since getting this body ~7 months ago.

Honestly, it's more camera than I need but it's nice to have the options available if I want them. (Currently, I don't use multiple exposures, 4.5fps advance, many of the custom functions, or dynamic AF, to name a few.)

My only real complaint is that if you use the rubber eyecup (DK-6?), you'll find that it needs to be flipped out of the way to open the back to change film. But since I bought the rubber eyecup, I brought this problem upon myself. :)

If the price of the F100 were to come down a bit ($1000-1100), I would give it a Value Rating of 5. I bet after the N90s disappears the price will drop a little, at which point I think it will be a better deal.

No stabilised lenses (per Canon) - or at least exhorbitently expensive
Nikon lense. tend to be more expensive than Canon, Minolta

This is my first Nikon and also my first AF camera. I'm very impressed with its handling overall. It's been extremely reliable (touch wood :)) and I couldn't be happier.

Wow. What a camera.
I falling love with this camera in the first sight. It is well balanced with 80-200 f2.8ED-D lens.
My freind bought a Canon EOS-3 ( A great camera also). He was proud of it until he saw my F100.
One thing I regret about this one - only if Nikon made this camera five years ago, I would have taken many more great quality photos!

Strength:

-solid build quality
-fast AF (quiter than the F90X)
-very simple to use
-electronic depth-of-field preview button
-4.5 fps without the battery pack, 5.0 with the MB-15
-great helpful custom setting, makes it a lot easier for bracketing
-in Sydney, it's almost $2000 cheaper than the F5

Weakness:

compared to the F90x, there is lack of the pre-programmed function, but hey-this is a camera that nikon can call a professional model outside the F1-5 series.

Top-notch performance and build quality. The best camera I have own so far. Fell short of the F5, but with the $2000 difference in price for me as an amateur, the F100 is the best choice for me.
