WOW. I had my mind made up to go with F5. Until I looked at this beauty. I had a hard time finding someone to convince me to go F5. Fast, smooth and feels great in your hand. 4.5fps is d*** fast. The custom options are easy to access and the camera is usable right out of the box. It is the type of product that you can get everything out of it without having to plow through the owners manual. Shooting w/ 28-105 while waiting for my 80-200/f2.8 to come in. This is the type of camera that makes you want to go out and shoot.

Built like a tank. I bought it, then after six months had insecurities that led me to also try the Canon EOS-3, thinking the ECF would result in a greater % of good grab shots of the family. Canon optics are very good, etc., but to me the EOS-3 felt way too insubstantial and fragile, though this is admittedly is a subjective thing. The EOS-3 ECF didn't work at all for me, though I had great luck for years with the Canon Elan IIe ECF. I sent the Canon EOS-3 back, and am completely satisfied with the F-100. The only thing I would change on the F-100 would be to reposition the control that moves the autofocus/metering area so it can be accessed without removing your eye from the viewfinder. No big deal. I recommend the F-100 without reservation.

Strength:

Great Af system, though it takes a while to switch from single-point AF
New LED viewfinder info better than old LCD displays in Nikon
Feels really soild in the hand
Accurate metering except in really tricky light situations
Takes AA batteries
Good flash sync speed
All mode DOF preview
Handles well with SB28, especially in fill flash situations
All the controls helpful with no compromise to first-time buyers such as mulitiple programme modes
Controls well laid out and easy to master
Quick exposure compensation possible with one-finger operation
Nearest-point AF selector very useful in some macro situations with moving subjects

Weakness:

Battery drain; especially with my 600/4 AF-I lens
Lacks viewfinder eyepiece (unlike F90x)
No mirror lock up
AF selector sometimes sticks due to dirt on contacts

The best SLR I have used. Lighter and more compact than the F5, but offers almost all the features you could possibly want at almost half the price; for my photography I opted for two F100s over a single F5. Much more solid feel than the F90x. Mulit-point AF a real must for action photography, which would limit current Nikon choice to F5, F100 or F80. Should take care of almost any photographic situation without any problem. The bottom line: leaves you to think about your artistic talent, let it do all the technical stuff!

Customer Service

Camera's power system failed within a few weeks, no problems following repair. Slow service in South Africa; luckily my dealer provided me with a spare body.

Rugged construction; great ergonomics; quiet and solid sound.

Weakness:

No view finder shutter, no leader out on rewind.

I'm very happy with camera. It's a workhorse, especially with MB15 and SB28.

Customer Service

Haven't used for camera. But lens purchased with camera is in Nikon repair in Melville. They say one week turn around, we'll see.

Strength:

nice rugged metal body
sticky rubber material on grip
easy to use, good ergonomics
uses 4 regular aa batteries, a plus here for aa are easy to find, and cheaper, even though they add weight
fast focus, accurate, the 5-point system eliminates the need for recomposition
paint on camera bottom seems more durable than N90's

Weakness:

mirror dampening not as smooth as Contax's
a little on the heavy side
prism not interchangeable
viewfinder is not 100% coverage
back door seems flimsy, it flexes compared to rest of camera

nice camera, well built, rugged, may last a long time. lighter than F5, and much cheaper. all controls are easy to use, but still prefer the old-fashioned knobs a la Contax which are even more intuitive and easy to use.

Customer Service

camera focus selector was faulty after 1 week of usage. had to send in for repair. Took Nikon 4 weeks to clean up contacts !

Strength:

Built VERY well, Fast AF, Reliable, well balanced.

Weakness:

Apart from the price there is not mutch to complain about. The Extra $1000 (Australian) between the F100 and the F90x does not equate to that much.

The F100 for me was an upgrade from my F60. I know that it was a big jump from the F60 to the second best camera in the Nikon range but I have the "gotta have the best syndrome" Not to say that I am dissatisfied it is really a top camera. The Thing that really impressed was the AF speed and the performance with the SB28 is very good.

P.S: Just in response to the negative feedback from Mr Richard Sommers. If you prefer a cannon then that is your personal choice. There is no need for that kind of stupidity. It is very disappointing when you read such bull especially from a so-called "professional Photographer". As one other person commented, and I totally agree with him "Get a life".

Thankyou

Light weight, fast autofocus and motor drive, fairly rugged, Nikon F mount of course

Weakness:

For photojournalism I think it should be better sealed against water. For sports a faster motor would be nice

I stepped up from the N90s, and I couldnt afford the F5, Its the perfect medium. The price is great for the features you get. Excellent for all around use, photojournalism, most sports, portraits, and even landscapes with the DOF preview. Untill I can afford an F5, it'll do.

Weakness:

AF (Always need a faster one)

In an earlier review I reported dissapoinment with the AF. Almost a year later I have grown to like it very much, it's almost as fast as I want, but still by far faster than I can do it manually in many situations like when using long telelenses in the 300-500mm range with moving subjects. After the addition of a MB15 handling became even better, and after I switched over to NiMh batteries, all worries about the powerconsumption are gone. Though not lightyears faster than the F90X as far as AF is concerned, the feel and handling are better, although if you don't have the money, it's no shame to get the F90X.

One a side note, why are there so many obviously very frustrated Canon owners 'reviewing' this camera? Is it so good that they see it as a threat to the reputation of their Canon's and try to influence a possible newbie with a negative review? Not only is their childish negative ranting and rating annoying and irritating, it sheds more light on some very frustrated individuals who apperently build their whole lives on the status of the lighttight box they (hopefully) use to take pictures with, than that it adds something valuable to this forum.

Get a life, Canon, Nikon, Leica, Minolta, Hasselblad Mamiya etc. all make great camera's, but the quality of the picture is decided by the talent of the photographer. If you only can boast about the camera brand you use, you're not pulling the rating of the 'competitor' down, but only your own.

Customer Service

Excellent. After reading recently about problems with high power consumption for the earliet models, had it fixed before it became a problem for me. Did it for free, including a software upgrade in about half and hour.

Strength:

Good handling, lighweight, extreme viewfinder brightness, faultless exposure in most situations.

Weakness:

Not a great improvement from F90X, except for price tag. Joystick control is more fashionable than useful, 5 autofocus points can't solve all compositions. Terrible for my taste the sound & feel of depth-of-field control button. I really prefer a mechanical one.

I can't really see why this camera is so expensive, apart from materials, magnesium body & so on. I do not love multiple AF points, which are more stressing than useful in most situations. Maybe for someone involved in sports photography that would be different. After all, a badly-positioned market product.
