Strength:
Great handling, well-built, bright finder, accurate and versatile metering, smooth and quiet shutter operation, ergonomically excellent.
Weakness:
I really can't fault this camera for my uses. Some complain about no MLU, but for me it hasn't been an issue. I love this camera! It is a joy to use, and it inspires confidence. I usually don't worry at all about exposure, unless there is backlighting. Then I simply switch to spot-metering. The camera is very well-made, and fits my hand perfectly. It feels great with every lens I have tried. Controls are easy to use and located right where they should be. It reminds me of my old Nikon FTN, a rugged workhorse, but this one is much more elegant and refined. Autofocusing is super quick and accurate, even with older Nikon lenses. I am looking forward to getting a couple of AF-S lenses to put on it. Then I will be in heaven. Customer Service Haven't needed any service so far. A little over one year of ownership. Strength:
Very quick focus with multi-position focus areas; Matrix metering works great for almost all situations; Very solid yet lightweight; control dials are well positioned; aperture controlled by dial versus lens ring (nice); More useful features than F-4 and N-series; Lighter and easier to carry than F-5; Utilizes great Nikon flash TTL system; Takes AA batteries!
Weakness:
No mirror lock-up (minor beef); No onboard flash (not expected) Use professionally for surveillance photography and part-time for people and pets. Has the best features of an F-5 with the compactness of an N-90s. Extremely easy to handle in split-second situations - fast focus, excellent metering and intitive controls. F-5 was too bulky, the N-series didn't focus as well and the F-4's technology is dated. This is the Nikon I was waiting for. Customer Service Not used (six months old) Similar Products Used: F-5, F-4, N-90s, N-90, N-8008. |

This camera has allowed me to expand my creative potential by providing reliable and fast metering and autofocus. When in fast-breaking situations, I can rely on the cameras readings to provide quality results. The controls are simple and intuitive, the camera sits well in the hand, and the body has proven to be very durable. All in all, an excellent camera. Have used this on many travel assignements in harsh environments with no problems.
Weakness:
Slower frames per second than the F5. Nikon accessories are expensive. An excellent camera geared toward the advanced shooter. Many functions that will be appreciated by experienced photographers (DOF preview, 3 metering modes, 5 spot meter and autofocus areas, etc.). Camera is simple to use and has rapid learning curve. Customer Service Not used. Similar Products Used: Most models from Canon, Nikon, and Minolta. (Worked in a camera shop and tested each model.) |

This is the first modern camera that has truly impressed me. I am an engineering craftsman by day and very, VERY fussy. It was love at first sight/feel!! The handling is awesome, solid, and the ergs. are perfect for me, and you I bet! I can't put it down!!! It WILL improve your photography. Couple this body with the 28-105 3.5 - 4.5 AF for a very satisfactory package!!!!
Weakness:
I don't like the projected "spill over" of L.E.D illumination on the selectable focusing areas in "low light" to "no light" conditions. This varies from body to body. I have checked this out at Nikon, and having seen that others have the same "problem" am now quite satisfied. I really AM way too fussy. This IS a lovely instrument! It has loads of eye relief (you SEE the "photograph" in the finder with no "eye scanning" at all) Customer Service Apart from letting me try other bodies to satisfy myself , none yet. Solid construction, but fairly light. Feels excellent in the hands. Fast AF. Relatively easy to use controls. Bright finder. Very versitile, customizable.
Weakness:
Lack of MLU. I'm thinking.... This really is an excellent camera, and a great value, I think, in 35mm photography. I am slightly disappointed about the lack of MLU, since I am planning on doing some astrophotography and macro work, but this was the camera for me. I just did not feel that I could justify an extra $850 for the F5, especially since I am not a professional. In addition, the weight and size of this camera really attracted me. I am planning to take this on backcountry hikes, day hikes, and travel to other countries with it and such, and that means that I am going to have to carry this around. And it is a pound lighter than the F5. The lack of color metering was never an issue to me. I am convinced that the 3d matrix will do just fine ALL of the time for my use. So this camera with a 28-105 or 24-120 zoom is an excellent travel combination that won't weigh you down too much, and will give you most of the functions you will ever need, and excellent results. You can't beat Nikon glass. And for more serious photography, it has a multitude of features that make this camera a professional level camera. I especially like the auto exposure-bracketing and the wide array of flash modes that are available with the SB-28 flash (Standard TTL, red eye reduction, slow sync (nighttime), slow sync w/red eye reduction, and rear curtain sync; and with the SB-28, you can get high speed flash sync up to 1/4000, I believe, among many its other options). The reviews on this site are right on too, except for the Canon-loving idiot Guss4 GNGF, who was too cowardly to use his/her own name and probably never even owned let alone touched an F100. Anyway, if you have an investment in Nikon glass, and want to upgrade but not spend $2000+ for a 3-pound monster, then the F100 is highly recommended. If you're looking for a new 35mm system altogether, then it is most definitely worth serious consideration. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it as a starter camera though. Get an old FE or FE2 or something, which are great basic cameras that are easy to use and learn on. Then when you're ready, you'll have a backup body. Customer Service No experience yet..., although the Nikon people were very helpful when I called to ask them a question about the F100. Similar Products Used: Nikon FE. Mamiya Pro 645TL. Canon A1. Dynamic AF ability is outstanding. Solid as a rock, and very intuitive in design. Amazing, accurate flash abilities with SB28.
Weakness:
The MF/AF button near the lens barrel is a little too small. The F100 feels like it built for my hands. Solid construction provides confidence when I take it climing and hiking to out-of-the way shooting locations. It has made me better photographer, especially so since most of my subjects are fast- moving people, cars, and motorcycles. Its cost was almost 3 times as much as my N70 it replaced...but turned out to be well worth it. Wish I had bought when it first came. For anyone considering moving up to an F100, do it today. Not tomorrow, TODAY! Customer Service N/A yet Similar Products Used: N70 |

It has all the functions I need, and noen of the functions I don't want (different picture programs etc.). Handles very good. I am especially fond of the flash exposure metering, that is really much more accurate than on my earlier F801s (N8008s).
Weakness:
It's not a camera, it's a computer..... It's all been said before.... Customer Service Interfoto (the Norwegian Nikon agent)repaired my camera twice in less than 2 weeks, BUT they did not solve the problem. I got a new camera, so at least they made me satisfied. Fast, responsive, well built, great "feel" in your hands. Never had any problems and it almost always meters correctly.
Weakness:
No mirror lock up, must know custom features or carry the card ie (who cares) This is a great camera for anyone serious about photography that wants the features without all the weight. The MB-15 vertical grip is a recommended addition that makes it even more sturdy. Customer Service Nikon has great customer service (I work at a camera store during the evenings and they are really good.)
