Solid camera - Comfort of use - Incredible autofocus speed with selected lenses - Flash features with SB28 - Matrix metering never defaulted - All this in a very convivial and light-weighted camera
Weakness:
No MLU - Plus given the finders are not interchangeable, they could have added an integrated flash unit - Even if SB28 works great with the camera, it gets a little bulky sometimes ... This is the best camera I ever hold in my hands - I was never disappointed by the results, even in the worst lighting situations, and it makes killer photos combined with the SB28 - Customer Service Never had to call them - The camera is sturdy as a rock and appears so far extremely reliable Similar Products Used: N8008 |

LACKS SEPERATE AF& AE BUTTON AN EXCELLENT SLR WITH ALMOST ALL DESIRED PRO FEATURES.PROBABLY THE BEST IN ITS CLASS. NOT CHEAP BUT QUALITY DOES COST.WISH IT HAD THE F5 RGB METER. BACK LIGHTED SITUTATIONS ARE A PROBLEM AS WITH MOST AUTO EXPOSURE CAMERAS.SPOT METERING IS THE ANSWER TO THAT PROBLEM. THE DYNAMIC AUTO FOCUS IS AMAZING . STILL DONT KNOW HOW THEY DO IT, I ONLY KNOW IT CAN RENDER SHARP IMAGES THAT MANUAL FOCUSING COULD NEVER ACCOMPLISH. OVERALL DESPITE LACK OF MIRROR LOCK-UP WHICH I MISS & CANT UNDERSTAND WHY IT WAS OMITTED, THE F100 IS STILL AN OUTSTANDING PICTURE TAKING INSTRUMENT. NIKON HAS A DEFINITE WINNER WITH THIS ONE. I CAN SEE IT CUTTING INTO F5 SALES. Customer Service SO FAR SO GOOD Similar Products Used: NIKON N90S |

Beautifully build, great viewfinder, really quiet, fast focusing, works well in the dark.
Weakness:
Three of the four F100's that I have owned have malfunctioned. One rewound film early (i.e., in the middle of the roll), one under-exposed, and one had the focusing point selector stop working. A Pro body should be more reliable. It seems there are still many bugs in the F100. Similar Products Used: F5, Canon EOS-3, A2, Elan IIE |

Very well handling, rugged, flash system, AA batteries, fast focus, very good metering system, very good layout of control buttons, ease of use.
Weakness:
I have not experienced any thing wrong with my F100, but from the net, I have heard a lot of complains about defects of this camera. This is a very good camera Holding it in my hands, I feel I have a need of taking pictures. Don't ever use cheap AA baterries which cause errors message on the LCD evey time those batteries are used. Customer Service So far, never try. Similar Products Used: Nikon N50, 60, 70, 90s and F5, Canon ElanIIe |

None for my type of photography. The F100 is indeed a very competent and relaible camera. The way I se it you have to look hard after weaknesses. Perhaps lack of MLU or finder cap is annoying but to be honest how many of us really needs it to produce good pictures.I am very proud of owning the F100 wich I believe is the easiest and most relaible camera for the money on todays market Customer Service sorry to say, nikon in sweden sucks.I had a numbers of faults on my F100,they are all fixed now then. But nikon sweden I must say took there time to fix it.Way too long time without any satisfacted explanations. 3fps silent (3 times F5), 19s silent rewind (try manual for F5), automatic rewind (impossible on F5). The ultimate stealth camera!
Weakness:
The metering is nowhere near as accurate or reliable as the F5, unless you have a relatively low contrast scene. It can be fooled easily. Like the F5, it eats batteries and only gets around 10 rolls a set, regardless of power source. And after a few months of regular use, the grip will start loosening and peeling off... But I wear gloves for better grip, and to keep oil and fingerprints off my equipment... So what about it lacking mirror lockup--90% of photographers never use it. So what about not having "leader-out rewind"--you can buy a tool in any photo store that will pull the film out of the canister... For me, the F5 is ideal for a stealth camera, faster AF and silent shooting, automatic rewind is more efficient than 2 buttons on the F5, and it's small and lightweight so you can do things with it that you can't with the F5. Don't buy anything less than an F100, though. Nikon's older cameras stink for AF and metering, and lack all sorts of functionality. The vertical grip changes your whole style of photography, abolishing the tendency of most people to shoot mainly horizontal compositions. Also add an eyecup. It lets you see better in bright sun, and stabilizes the camera. Customer Service Never needed. Similar Products Used: F5, N90s, FM2, F4s, etc. |

Further to my previous review on the camera I have to make special mention of its flash capabilities - it is that good. Great range of flash modes. Fantastic 3D balanced - fill flash in all modes. Camera information transfer to unit like SB28 fast and accurate (Mode, focal length etc). Preflash for evaluation of exposure works well (judging by the results). 250th Flash sync great for fill flash - what I use flash for most.
Weakness:
None When coupled with the SB28 the results are exceptional. It makes me use on-camera flash again as a viable complementary light source. The F100 flash-meter is controlled brilliantly and does a good job of providing correct illumination regardless of subject position (Most important - I try to avoid photographic situations where on-camera flash is the primary souce of lighting). 3D-Matrix ballanced fill-flash has to be experienced to be believed. Even small background areas are balanced to perfection with the flash illuminated subject/foreground. I believe that the incorporation of distance information in determing flash exposure plays a major role in the quality of the results. Great stuff. What a wonderful Camera. Nikon's best all around effort to date. I've been using their equipment for 40 years. Lightweight, very good feel and unbelieveable metering in the most difficult situations.
Weakness:
Missing a few features like mirror lock-up, interchangeable finders, blah, blah, but for the money and 99% of the situations, it's great. Now that I've had a chance to put 40-50 rolls through it, it's my new best friend!! Customer Service Haven't had a problem yet, but Nikon has always been there when I needed them and I don't see why it would be any different with this product. Most ergonomic Nikon I've used; solid, intuitive handling. Even with the MB-15 battery pack, still reasonably compact and easy to carry all day. Compared to the F5, the AF sensor indicators glow in red (as opposed to black in the F5), a big advantage in low light.
Weakness:
None for the price (if you need MLU, interchangeable finders, buy the F5) A great camera. I almost bought the F5 but chose the F100 based on weight and the AF sensor indicator light mentioned above. Customer Service As luck would have it, my F100 died on the second roll (it wouldn't rewind). The rewind fork that extends down into the film cassette had sheared off. I was in Hong Kong, and Nikon Hong Kong service station repaired it in less than an hour. One disappointment: even though the body was clearly a US model sold with a one year worldwide warranty (and it had been on the market for less than a year so it was clearly under warranty) they wouldn't do the repair under warranty without my warranty card. They did the repair, took an imprint of my credit card, and didn't charge me once I faxed them a copy from stateside. As great as their repair service was, their customers shouldn't have to go through hoops like that... Similar Products Used: F2, F3HP, F4s |

Build, User Interface, Varible Spot Metering, Focus tracking all lend to professional capability of this camera.
Weakness:
Lack of Mirror lockup The F100 is a reincarnated F3. Its ability to get the shot, as visualized by the photographer, makes the F100 a tool for the artist. Its handling and user interface, makes this camera a more transparent tool, that interfers less with the artists vision. The F3 did that in a more primitive sense.
