Strength:

Extremely compact and light weight. Easy to load. Eye catching design. Built-in sliding lens cover. Very sharp lens.

Weakness:

Red-eye! Even with red-eye reduction turned on. Cheap, flimsy plastic casing (don't drop!). Viewfinder very difficult to see through. Pricey (for what you get).

This is the first "Nikon" p&s camera I ever bought. I am a big Nikon fan and am always impressed with their quality (own FE2 & F3). However, sorry to say, Nikon needs a little more
solidness for this one. As soon as I opened and loaded this camera "flimsy" came to mind. "Made in China" also dissappointed me. By today's standards, this camera is only average. Included are the usual bells and whistles (auto everything,
time/date stamp, very useful zoom lens), however what initially sold me was the "ED" optics advertised. I found this lens to be sharp as a tack. Extremely clear for a point n' shoot. But the every other red-eyed picture plus the cheesey
casing offset the optics too dramatically to make this camera worth while for me to keep. I took group photos and found red-eye in three individuals within the same picture! I found that odd. However I find the flash too close to the lens to avoid this problem. It may be me because I am truly spoiled with my bounce and handle mounted flashes for my SLR'S. But I believe this camera has more red-eye problems than others.
If you need a small light weight point n' shoot
(minus people) with a tack sharp lens in this price range, this is the one. But if you would like a quality all around camera with high marks
in all its specifications, please look else where.

Strength:

sharp optics,
clear menu,
pleasing form factor

Weakness:

price,
slow zoom response

it does feel flimsy because of its small size and light weight, but build quality is quite good.
I have taken 4 rolls of film in the last 2 months (purchased Oct. 2000) with this camera, all photos came out very sharp.
The flash did come on often when I didn't expect it, and the zoom has a noticable delay (seems all
Nikon P&S behave that way), otherwise I am happy with this camera.

Strength:

o Good Optics (ED)
o Small
o Lightweight

Weakness:

o Small viewfinder
o Red-eye
o Zoom lag

The Nikon 120ED is an excellent value if you are looking for a point and shoot camera with a relatively large zoom. The image quality is very sharp in a 4X6 print due to the ED lens -- I have yet to see how well enlargments will fare. The autofocus also worked very well. The camera itself is small and easy to carry which is very useful if you are traveling with this camera. The ergonomics of the camera work very well; There aren't too many buttons to worry about and the zoom buttons on the back keep my hand away from the sensors on the front.

There is one button to set all the modes which are pretty standard for a P&S: Flash, No Flash, auto-flash, Red-eye reduction, infinity focus. The viewfinder also has parallax adjustment markers for taking close up photos as well as a diopter adjustment (+-1.5). This may come in handy if you wish to look through the viewfinder without glasses. That said, the viewfinder is fairly small but I found that most similar cameras also had a small viewfinder. Red-eye does occur with this camera despite the red-eye reduction but this will be a problem with just about any small P&S camera so I can't really hold that against it. There is a noticeable zoom lag; this can be slightly annoying but time to learn about the lag and a little patience reduces the problem.

If memory serves this camera seems comparable to the Olympus Epic Zoom 80 which is about the same price but with a smaller zoom. The Olympus, is weather-resistant, however.

Overall, an excellent value for the money considering the quality optics and features.

Strength:

Attractive body, compact, light weight, sharp (ED) lens, easy film loading.

Weakness:

Some red eye problem, zoom lag, don't have as many functions as other cameras in the same class.

I'll skip over the list of camera features and go right to its performance. This camera takes very good outdoor pictures and indoor under normal lighting condition. I've even tried taking pictures in dimmed room, and got good pictures. I used mostly 400 film speed. The built-in flash works well from about 12'-0" back. The slow-sync mode needs a tri-pod or mono-pod. Bottom line is this camera will give you consistently good pictures if you don't exceed the camera's specifications.

However, this camera is not without any weaknesses. It has a small viewfinder which takes a little time getting used to. Not only that, the zoom buttons are also in the back. Some users may like it, but I use my left eye to look into the viewfinder. So when I adjust the lens zoom with my right thumb, I found my right thumb gets real close to my right eye, which is very annoying. It would be even worse if you take picture with your glasses on. The camera does not response as quick as I would like when I press the shutter release button, especially in red-eye reduction mode, which makes it a little difficult to take pictures of my 1-year old nephew who could'n stay still for more than 1 second. There is still some red-eye problem but that is expected with the flash so close to the lens, (typical of p&S camera). I don't like it when the flash pops up every time I turn the camera on. It should have been designed to pop up only when needed. Comparing with other p&S cameras, outside of the ED lens, it doesn't have any other features above the rest of the field. I found the Canon 120 to have numerous more features for only a slightly higher price. The only thing that kept me from getting the Canon 120 was that side way pop-out flash.

In conclusion, I bought this camera because of the Nikon name and the ED glass. I like its reliability so far, but I don't see it at the leading edge of technology, and there're still room for improvement in the design. So I can only give it an overall rating of 4.5 eventhough I have to select 5 stars below. Value rating a 4 because you can find other similar cameras at lower prices.

Strength:

Compact, many features

Weakness:

"Door" slides open in when stored in pockets or luggage, causing camera to turn on and batteries to run out. AF still gives blurry photos, mine is now broken.

If I could do it again, I would buy a different camera.

Compact point and shoot with zoom.

Weakness:

Came open in my pocket and put my finger right on the lens by accident.

I bought this camea after visiting this site to look for some recommendations. We had a 15 year old Canon point and shoot. My wife wanted point and shoot with zoom and date stamp while I was looking for something with a good lens. After considering the Yashica T-4/Super T5 I decided not to get one because of the bad reviews. I wasn't going to pay for a Leica and was looking at the Olympus Stylus Epic Zoom with the date when I came upon the 120ED/QD. I have taken two rolls of Christmas film with it and they have, with very few exceptions turned out very well. There were some bad pictures but they were usually taken in poor light at the max zoom so the flash wasn't very effective.

I do have a few quibbles with the camera but seeing as it's so superior to our old one I'm not really complaining. The pictures are clear and sharp and the camera is easy to use - which is really what counts. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone wanting a good quality P&S at a reasonable price.

I was impressed with the easy to use focus lock on the shutter release button. The pictures it produces aren't that great. Nikon supposedly put an ED pro lens in it. Those disposable cameras take similar quality photos.

Strength:

Produces extremely sharp pictures. Very compact which makes it easier to carry to various functions.

Weakness:

Red eye just like any point and shoot. The red eye can be reduced or eliminated by not zooming in, taking the picture in as much light as possible and getting close to the subject.

Excellent Camera for the price. I own a Pentax ZX-10 and wanted a point shoot with similar quality.

Weakness:

no control over film speed

This is my second point and shoot camera my last one was a pentax which is over 10 years old and still works but went with Nikon due to the fact I use Nikon SLRs and lens quality was very important. Pictures are very sharp and clear as you would expect from nikon lenses. You will proberly have to use 400 film due to it being and f5.6 lens but a very good camera which I carry with me all the time. This camera is ideal for anyone whos wants nikon quality optics in an point and shoot camera.

True picture colors.

Weakness:

Red eye reduction don't work
Slow zoom
Focusing takes forever

I returned this camera after a month of use. I was very dissapointed. All the pictures had red eyes (even if I used red eye reduction). Zoom is too slow. Taking pictures take forever (my 3 year old daughter cuold not sit still that long). Many pictures come out of focus. Plastic case feels very weak and sometimes did open itself when I put the camera to my pocket. Don't be fooled by Nikon quality, this one is a toy, not a real camera. I may give a try to a Nikon 80. The only good thing is the pictures real colors. This was my first Nikon P&S camera and I was very dissapointed. Right now I am trying Minolta Freedom 125 and cannot wait for the results.
