Model Reviewed: AF24mm f/2.8D Nikkor

Strength:

1. Sharp and contrasty at every aperture; and
2. Compact and light.

Weakness:

1. Prone to flare like most wide angle lenses, so use the lens hood.

This lens was my workhorse lens from the manual focus version to the current AF D version for twelve years. I got tired of changing lenses in the field and traded the AF D lens for the AF Zoom-Nikkor 35-70 mm f/2.8 D in the Spring of 1997. The zoom was sold and I purchased the AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 28-70 mm f/2.8 D IF-ED in March 1999. The best medium wide angle to short telephoto workhorse lens I have ever owned.

I would recommend you also test pilot the AF 20 mm f/2.8 D before you decide on the AF 24 mm f/2.8 D.

Strength:

Fast focusing, extremely sharp near and far, nice contrast and decent price.

Weakness:

None whatsoever.

I'd never used a wide angle lens before this, and bought it upon the recommendations of this site, other site research and a good friend. As far as I'm concerned it's a must have lens in my bag from now on. On my latest trip I overused it, but learned a great deal. Don't be afraid to get very close to subjects, whether people or landscapes, as you get spectacular results with interesting foregrounds and vast backgrounds. Every photo from this lens was sharp and had great contrast. Highly recommend.

Strength:

-It's a super sharp sonofagun.
-Lightweight
-Excellent DOF
-CRC (Close Range Correction)
-Fast focusing

Weakness:

Prone to flare. But that can be avoided with the hood and extra care taken by the photographer.

Like you'll hear from the follwing reviews, this lens is a must for a any outdoor shooter. This lens produces images that have sheer brilliance. Have it in your bag NOW! For the price you're paying for this lens it's almost a steal. Great for those landscape shots that include a foreground element. Everything remains sharp and with very minimal distortion throughout the entire image area. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Sharp, small, light.

Weakness:

Slight flare. AF is sometimes noisy with my N90s but OK with F100.

This is a d*** sharp lens, but careful, dont drop it.

Customer Service

Ok. I dropped the lens once and the focusing ring was wiggly. Sent it in to Nikon which took 3 weeks to repair.

Strength:

Small and light lens.
cheap 52mm filters.
Great for long exposures at night.

Weakness:

Flare can be a problem w/o the hood.
Some light fall-off at f/2.8
Vignettes with regular size filters.
I wish Nikon made a 24mm f/1.4

I use this lens as my "normal" (always on my camera) lens except when wildlife is abundant. On a wall in my room I have 12 prints, 9 were taken with the 24/2.8 D.

Customer Service

Once dropped it on a marble floor from a height of 5 feet while attached to N70 - nothing broke.

Strength:

Excellent performance with near/far compositions. Center sharpness is excellent at all apertures.

More contrast than the 24/2.

Better manual feel than the 28/2.8 AF-D, with better damping of the focusing ring.

Weakness:

Considerable light fall-off wide open which doesn't improve until about f/5.6 or so. Watch the corners, especially if you have expanses of even color, such as sky. The 24/2 is better in this regard.

More prone to vignetting with filters than the 24/2 -- use thin ones especially if you also use the hood.

Nice heft for an AF lens, but that means it's relatively heavy too.

Supposed to be optically identical to the AIS version. I tend to shoot wide angle lenses with manual focus, since it's a minor annoyance to have to lock autofocus and recompose. Also, it's awfully nice to have f/2, which is why I sold this lens despite its exceptional performance.

Strength:

-sharp
-very good contrast
-almost no light fall off
-good Nikon "plastic AF" lens construction

Weakness:

Recently I have tended to use shorter focal length primes. The 24mm range I find very useful and so I bought the AFD 24mm f2.8. It is every bit as good as my AIS version and results have been very good. It is a pleasure to use on my F100. Excellent lens to own.

Customer Service

Required twice. Once to clean lubricant from diaphram of Nikkor AIS 85mm F2.0, and once to adjust diaphram mechanism of my new Nikon AFD 85mm f2.8. Service was very good and professional but not cheap. You get what you pay for!
