Strength:

Light Portable easy to use

Weakness:

Feels plasticy

This lens is a good entry level product and I am very happy with it although one day I would like to upgrade to a faster lens for my F100 this is a good buy and takes good clear photos.
To the people who gave it such a panning what do you expect for a lens that costs so little?
It's good value and a great light little lens to take on trips.

Cheap

Bought as my first venture into the world of AF as part of an N60 kit after using F2's forever.
The camera is great, but the bundled lens, well, spend a few bucks more and get a higher level Nikon, or for about the same, a Tamron. Although I am sure that some of the problems are mine, this lens rattles, hunts for focus and is slowww.
Additionally, the N60 would be better if it were an N80.
I have a Tamron 28 - 105 on order based on the reviews on this site and only hope it performs as well as my other manual and AF lenses

Customer Service

Nikon is usually pretty good but slow. With this lens, unless it is warranty (free) trash it

Strength:

Brand? price

Weakness:

Plenty. Flimsy focusing ring, slow & stupid AF, little vignetting at 28mm (w/o filter!) & basically what other ppl hv complained about here.

As this is my first foray into the SLR world with the F80, I used the cheapest lens available, wanting to upgrade only when I have enough experience to dictate what I need. For the money though, you cannot ask for much. Budget $ = budget pics. But seriously, the lens has an inferior build quality (I won't really know if the d*m*ed focusing ring / zooming barrel is damaged or not, it's so loose!). Optics-wise I hv not much to say as I'm not that experienced yet. Planning to get the 70-300mm f4-5.6 ED and see what turns out. This is a lens for ppl like me, who are new and don't know well enough what they want or need. Won't be heart-broken if it's lost, damaged or purchased wrongly.

Image sharpness
Vignetting at 28mm

I was not very impressed with this lens. The price is right. However, I saw a noticable quality difference in terms of sharpness compared to the Konica Zooms I've used (a tough comparison since Konica lenses are VERY sharp). I was also disappointed in the level of vignetting at 28mm (no filter attached). For those not used to using tack sharp lenses, I suspect this lens would be just fine. I was not pleased with the lens and have upgraded to a Nikon 28-105.

Strength:

Best you can do for a zoom less than $400.

Weakness:

visible dust (from Moab) in seams of lense, none the worse for it

This lense is a great way to start before committing big bucks. Really probably only 3 stars when compared to professional lense but this thing is great.

Strength:

This lens is very well priced and makes a good first lens. The zoom range is very usable.

This lens proved to be very durable, I used it constantly for 4 years in some fairly unfavourable conditions and it performed flawlessly.

Weakness:

This lens is relatively clear but when compared to similar shots taken with higher quality lenses like the 20mm 2.8 or a 80-200 2.8 the difference is very obvious. Call me old fashioned but I don't like the polycarbonate construction, it just not the same.

Ultimately I found it too slow which lead me to replace it with a 35-80 2.8

Reliable and sturdy lens that does the job.

Strength:

I bought this lens to use it on my N60 body, replacing the 35-80mm that normally comes bundled. It was reasonably priced and produces sharp pictures, from edge to edge.

Weakness:

Don't even try to focus manually. The ring range is extremely short and it's almost impossible to do it.

Great performance for a compact lens. I would recommend it as your first lens or if you don't want to carry lots of lens for a trip. Not a good choice if you're thinking about taking indoors pictures with just the available light. It will almost always require a speedlight.

Strength:

Compact, light weight

Weakness:

A number of photographers shun this lens in favor of the more expensive 28-70mm F 3.5-4.5 zoom.
The main differences: This lens is slightly slower on the longer end of its focal length. Its mount is made of polycarbonate, opposed to the metal mount found on the 28-70. It lacks the macro feature of its more expensive cousin, and also has no focusing marks on the barrel for manual focusing. But I would rate it as optically equal to the image produced by the 28-70mm. A pro may not feel comfortable about the durability of a polycarbonate lens mount, and perhaps rightly so. But I don't think this presents much of a problem for an advanced amateur, who is not likely going to be handling his/her lenses as aggresively. And if you already own one of the better Nikkor Mirco lenses, the lack of a limited macro feature is unimportant. The lens takes good images, and is a good value.

Customer Service

My experience with Nikon customer service on the est coast is that they are reasonably fast, and own up to their mistakes when they make them. Reliable outfit.

Strength:

Nice fit to N70 with all the feechurs connected right.

Weakness:

At 80, it's just not the sharpest, I use my 70-210 in that range when I can.

It feels like a flippin' toy, but it works like a champ, for a lens with that range of zoom. It's a bit fuzzy to me (warning, I'm a picky SOB) in the longer range, but it does very nice at the wide end. Still, for a single lens when you don't want Mr. Tamrac breaking your shoulder, it's a good choice.

Strength:

A nice lens in the right price-to-value range. Great for the beginner who doesnt need
to spend a fortune to get a good lens at reasonable price, yet yield quality pictures.

Weakness:

Because it is mostly made from polycarbonate, the body has a plastic feel and because of its light weight may give the impression of being cheap. However, over the year I used the lens, before moving up in price and quality, the lens served me well with no problems that affected the operation or results.

A great beginners lens that will yield satifactory results and its price-to-value relationship is great.
