Overall Rating: 5 of 5
Value Rating: 5 of 5

Summary:
Spend the last 3 months touring Europe with my 5D Mark ii with 2 zooms and a prime. I got grew increasingly weary of 1).trying to guess which lens to bring each morning, 2). bringing the wrong lens and missing half of the shots or 3), bringing 2 or 3 lenses and fumbling around trying to change them ….. usually missing the shot in the mean time. In the mean time, my back of ‘stuff’ broke my back. In the had a lot of money tied up in lenses and i guess i wasn’t smart enough or patient enough to “get it right”. Returned to the States last month. Bought the Canon 28-300 and left for Tibet. Have spent the last 2 weeks walking around Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Macau and the Pearl River Delta. Every night when I get home, I download the results. Holy Cow, I mean H-O-L-Y COW! How did Canon put all of this in one lens !! I am just amazed. All of my other stuff is going on eBay.

Strengths:
From ‘hither’ to ‘yon’, this thing is remarkably flexible and incredibly sharp (a little tricky wide open at 300).

Weaknesses:
NONE (I read a lot of reviews where the biggest complaint was weight. Come of folks, this thing probably doesn’t weight any more than that water bottle you lugged around all day. Go the gym.

I had a Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L loaner from Canon a couple of years ago. I mostly used it with an EOS-1D Mark III. Man did I hate to return that lens. Although I often wished I had something wider, the 28-300mm L just can’t be beat if you want to carry only one lens. Yeah, it’s a tank. But the image quality is great for and the IS works really well. I used it on a trip to Yellowstone and almost never took it off the camera. I also took it on a snowy hike at Zion National Park and left all my other gear in the car. It’s really the best all-purpose lens I’ve ever used. If you can afford it and you can carry it, I think it’s a no-brainer – especially if you’re using a full-frame sensor body like the EOS 5D Mark II or EOS-1Ds Mark III.

Carrying the right equipment implies a lot of guesswork and some experience. I would luv to reduce the inventory of hardware I have to carry around for a photoshoot. I’m all for lenses that can capture different situations – WELL – without compromise.

    Derek-
This lens is really awesome. There are a couple of compromises, the most obvious one being the weight. This thing will punish your arm if you carry it all day. And it’s best used on full-frame cameras where the 28mm short end is really wide angle. On the more common APS-C cameras like the Digital Rebels and 40D or 50D, the 28mm wide end is effectively converted to about 38mm, which isn’t wide enough. So that means you need to pack a second lens. But with a full frame Canon like the EOS 5D Mark II, the 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS might be the very best all-purpose lens you can buy.
