Sophisticated design and intuitive touch-control operation over a versatile set of advanced functions bring new delight to the eyes and the hands

Nikon Coolpix S60 Digital CameraTokyo — Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of the COOLPIX S60. Representing the cutting edge of elegant design and intuitive operation, this stylish new compact camera introduces an entirely new touch screen interface that places all controls at the fingertips. And it does so in a delightful new way that makes picture-taking and playback more fun and exciting.

The COOLPIX S60 offers intuitive fingertip shooting control and a variety of exciting playback options, all seamlessly integrated into an innovative touch screen interface. With a newly developed 3.5-inch LCD monitor featuring a 16:9 widescreen display, the only physical button to press is the shutter – and even that isn’t needed when using handy features such as the self-timer or the new Smile Timer. The optimized interface offers a choice of three different HOME screens with large icons that make fingertip selection of operating modes and controls easy and accurate. Even the 5x zoom can be controlled via icons on the touch screen. Advanced features include the ability to lock autofocus and exposure on a subject by simply touching the corresponding location on the screen. The camera then follows the subject’s movement to ensure sharp focus when the shutter is pressed. And, when used in conjunction with the new Portrait One-touch Zoom function available in Portrait or Night Portrait scene modes, one more touch of the screen commands the camera to automatically zoom in and capture the subject with just the right amount of framing.

Touch controls also bring a new dimension of fun to viewing images, from fingertip scrolling through images, quick switching between various thumbnail views, instant image selection, and playback zoom. Auto image rotation ensures optimal display regardless of the picture’s orientation. The supplied stylus can be used for a variety of functions including: The Draw Function, which allows handwritten memos on the touch screen to be stored as JPEG files, and the Paint Function, which enables memos and frames to be added to images. And the new HD Pictmotion function combines with HDMI connectivity to allow high-quality playback and slide shows on an HDTV.

Imaging power begins with 10.0 effective megapixels of sharp resolution. This is matched to the enhanced compositional freedom of a 5x Zoom-NIKKOR lens that ably covers focal lengths from 33-165mm, a range broad enough for shooting everything from buildings or group pictures to close-up portraits. And an optimized processing system based on Nikon’s original EXPEED digital image-processing concept quickly delivers quality results with faithful color reproduction and subtle tones, even when taking advantage of sensitivity settings as high as ISO 3200*1 in low lighting conditions or when shooting fast-moving subjects.

The COOLPIX S60 adds further polish to the elegant sophistication with its smooth curves and beautiful finish of Nikon’s compact wave-surface design. One touch will prove that taking pictures has never been this fun before. The S60 will be available in a choice of Purplish Black, Pearl White, Bordeaux Red, Red, Pale Pink, or Rich Gold.*2

Nikon COOLPIX S60 Feature Highlights

All-new 3.5-inch wide LCD monitor featuring touch screen control
The 3.5-inch widescreen LCD newly developed for the COOLPIX S60 is a delight to both the eyes and the fingers. Its large size, high-resolution, 16:9 widescreen display, and 160° wide-viewing angle alone make picture-taking and playback more fun and exciting. But it’s the breakthrough excitement of the new optimized touch screen interface that makes the experience magic. From the user-friendly HOME screen display choices to the easy-to-read and easy-to-understand menu and setup displays, all operations are quick, intuitive, and fun. And the screen features a hard-coated finish that protects against damage and wear, and anti-reflection coating for better display in bright situations.

Automated and optimized shooting modes
Nikon’s new Scene Auto Selector helps enhance the carefree shooting experience by automatically distinguishing the type of setting in which you are shooting and then selecting the scene mode appropriate to that situation. The Smile Timer function automatically releases the shutter when the camera detects a smile on the face of the subject, which means always capturing those precious smiles in the brief instants they appear. And Blink Warning displays a message when it detects that a subject has blinked, offers quick magnified visual confirmation, and allows the shot to be retaken immediately to help ensure the desired results.

VR image stabilization for sharper results
Compensating for the effects of camera shake to realize sharper results and contribute to a more reassuring shooting experience, image sensor shift VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization frees you to enjoy capturing special moments without worrying about slight hand movements. This is particularly helpful when taking advantage of the 5x zoom lens telephoto focal lengths, or when shooting in lower lighting conditions.

ISO 3200 capability provides extended shooting range
Light sensitivity can be manually set as high as ISO 3200*, adding the power to shoot sharper, more natural-looking photos in lower lighting conditions, or to capture fast-moving subjects with outstanding clarity. And the new image-processing system produces clear results with minimal noise when shooting with high ISO settings. Auto ISO control is also available, with the camera automatically setting the optimal sensitivity across a range of ISO 64-800.

*ISO 3200 is available only for image sizes of 5M (2592 x 1944) or smaller.
