Sigma has announced the APO 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM zoom lens. This zoom lens features Sigma’s Optical Stabilizer, a weather-resistant design, 1 SLD and 2 FLD glass elements, super multi-layer lens coating, HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), and a rounded 9 blade diaphragm.

I own the predecessor to this Sigma 120-300mm lens and it has been a favorite of mine for sports and wildlife. As per all the reviews on this older lens, it is sharp. I have never used it hand held due to weight and it not having OS technology (which the newest version does have). For those drooling over the Nikkor 200-400mm f4, I think you’ll find this new Sigma lens a better alternative (believe it or not). Don’t take my word for it, just look at the reviews for this Sigma and the Nikkor from the time they were both released to date; The Sigma has always had strong reviews. The main cons were that the older version was a bit slow on auto focus and it didn’t have image stabilization technology. It is heavy but not heavier than the Nikkor 200-400mm. The Nikkor, on the other hand, per the experts, is not a true f4 but closer to an f5. Thus, use with teleconverters are not strongly recommended. However, the Sigm stays sharp and fast with both Sigma’s 1.4x AND 2x teleconvertors. Again, I always would use a Monopod or tripod when using my older version of this lens. However, with the new OS version, that might change.
