Gary Fong Flip-Cage Pro Point-And-Shoot Mini Tripod Thingy Announced

I’ve seen the little point-and-shoot camera cages in the back of photography magazines. They look interesting but I haven’t seen one in person yet. An announcement from Gary Fong Inc. has prompted me to take a closer look at their Flip-Cage. No, I don’t have one for review – yet. But I am reading their material and I can see it being useful – especially in the mountain bike / ski pack and the glove compartment. Compact camera stabilization is always a good thing to have and I think the Flip-Cage could easily replace a lot of the pocket-sized mini tripods I’ve used.

According to the latest press release, the “Flip-Cage is a 5-in-1 accessory that attaches to the point-and-shoot camera’s tripod mount and provides a protective roll cage … does double duty as a vertical or horizontal tabletop stand…” It can also be used as a macro stand or used to turn a “point-and-shoot in to a steady-cam.” The original Flip-Cage was designed for standard point-and-shoot cameras and has been around for a while. The recent announcement is for the new Flip-Cage Pro-Series, designed for bigger, high-end compact cameras. Based on the dimensions it looks like it could accommodate a Canon G-Series camera and might even be able to handle a camera as big as the Olympus E-PL1 Micro Four Thirds camera. Super zooms with lenses that telescope way out would definitely be an issue for the macro stand setup, though.
