Sigma announced a new image-stabilized 180mm macro lens at CES today. The Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the world’s first 180mm macro lens to offer a true macro magnification ratio of 1:1. That means that it can capture images of subjects at their actual size. The 180mm focal length means you don’t have to get as close to macro subjects, making it excellent for insect photography. The large f/2.8 aperture allows excellent depth-of-field control as well as low light versatility. The Sigma APO Macro 180mm also features Sigma’s OS Optical Stabilization to help minimize blur from camera shake. Sigma says the OS system in the 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens allows shutter speeds as much as four stops slower than without image stabilization. This makes the new 180mm macro lens a great choice for photographers who do handheld macro photos or shoot in low light.
The new Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens isn’t just for macro photographers. The fast-aperture , image-stabilized 180mm telephoto is also a good choice for portrait photographers, sports photographers and anyone else who wants a good low-light telephoto lens with real macro abilities. The new APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens replaces Sigma’s previous 180mm f/3.5 macro lens. Pricing and availability for the new Sigma APO Macro 180mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM lens have not yet been announced.

This looks pretty interesting to me. I have been kicking around the idea of expanding my macro photography and I like the idea of having a lens like this. I wonder how long before Canon/Nikon come out with their own f/2.8 versions and how will they compare to this?
