Nikon Coolpix S9100 18x Pocket Superzoom CameraNikon announced 8 new Coolpix compact digital cameras yesterday, including the new S9100 pocket superzoom. The Nikon Coolpix S9100 packs an 18x zoom lens (25-450mm equivalent) into a pocket-sized package. That puts the S9100 in a first place tie with the Samsung WB700 for longest zoom on a pocket camera. It has a 12-megpixel CMOS sensor with sensitivity up to ISO 3200 and 1080p full HD video.

Pocket superzooms are my favorite compact digital cameras right now because they offer so much flexibility in a package you can easily carry all the time. For the past few weeks I’ve been shooting with the Nikon Coolpix S8100 pocket superzoom, introduced last September. It has a 10x zoom lens and the same basic specs as the new S9100 so, aside from the new lens, we can reasonably expect the Coolpix S9100 performance to be similar to the S8100. The S9100 is a bit larger but the 25-450mm zoom should make it worth the larger size. I don’t have one to try, but I think the S9100 should still fit in a pants pocket, although it might be starting to push the limit of what’s reasonably comfortable.

The new Nikon Coolpix S9100 pocket superzoom camera should be available in stores and from online dealers in March. The suggested retail price is $329.95.

If you want to know more about pocket superzoom cameras, read my Pocket Superzoom Camera Guide and the pocket superzoom section of my 2011 CES Tradeshow Report. A whole bunch of new cameras, including the Nikon S9100, have been announced since I wrote that guide.
