Olympus E-620 – Conclusion

The Olympus digital SLRs offer some of the best camera value and, with the exception of the Panasonic Lumix G1 Micro Four Thirds camera, the most compact system that money can buy. The lenses – even the entry-level kit zooms – are very good. I don’t think Olympus makes a bad lens. Olympus is pitching the E-620 as their second Creative camera and the Art Filters and other creative features are all well and good. But what excites me about this camera is the compact size along with the improved auto focus, capture rate and 12-megapixel sensor, not to mention the built-in image stabilization and the 2.7-inch tilt/swivel LCD. With every generation of this series – the E-510, the E-520 and now the E-620 – I proclaim them the ultimate outdoor camera. And the E-620 is no exception. But this time, I think we finally have a sensor that we can live with for a while without looking ahead to the next upgrade. We’ll have to wait for a production camera to really test it. But I think the E-620 could very well be a camera worth investing in for the long haul – a camera that happily lives in my ski and mountain bike backpacks for years instead of just one season.

The Olympus E-620 camera body will be available in May for $699.99 US. It will also be available as a kit with the Olympus ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko Digital zoom lens. It will be shown for the first time at the annual PMA tradeshow, next week in Las Vegas. PhotographyREVIEW.com will be at PMA to show you all the new cameras and accessories, including the Olympus E-620. Watch for our 2009 PMA tradeshow coverage!

I think the E-620 looks like the best backcountry camera yet. Although, I just got the Panasonic Lumix G1 in for review. We’ll see how it goes with that camera. No image stabilization is the main limitation with the G1. It is pretty tiny, though…

I just puchased the E620 and I think it is a very good camera. It will take time for me to learn the ins and outs of it’s workings, but I think it will be fine. I purchased it with the kit lens and I am delighted with that also. The whole item balances very well.
