Sony announced two new DVD Handycam camcorders, the DCR-DVD850 & DCR-DVD650. The models include 60X optical zoom, Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lenses, and 1/8-inch 680K-pixel CCD imagers. The camcorders feature flexible recording to different media. The DCR-DVD650 camcorder has hybrid recording on three-inch DVD discs and Memory Stick PRO Duo media cards. The DCR-DVD850 camcorder features Hybrid Plus recording with an additional 16GB of embedded memory for up to 11 additional hours of LP mode recording time.
The DCR-DVD850 will be available for $430 and DCR-DVD650 for $300. The camcorders will be in stores in February.

I have recently pruchased a Sony DVD850, I appreciate the Video the camera produces, but would like the ability to have an external mike input. Is there anything in that would offer similar video capability but also offer the seperate mike input that I am seeking
Impressive looking camcorder , happy to receive it as a gift which coincided with a family celebration for our most senior member’s 95th … great time to capture all and memorialize the family gathering … just one MAJOR DEFICIENCY … the unit is not user ready right out of the box … no internal memory and the cam does not come with a sample CD/DVD or memory stick for immediate use / testing … could not take any video or still shots as it became necessary to go out and purchase media and in the middle of a family gathering, that was not likely !! I think that selling a product not field ready is pretty cheap of Sony … and to reward this mindset, this one is being returned !! It may be the world’s greatest camcorder but unfortunately, I’ll never have the experience.
WARNING !! Don’t give this cam as a gift with the expectation that it will be used immediately, as in Christmas morning, Mother’s / Father’s Day … your event will not get recorded, at least with your newest techno toy !
Will this camera [sony dcr-dvd 850] be suitable to make a dvd recorded movie in a dark room from a screen image projected from my 8mm projector. How many 8mm, 50 foot reels will i be able to put on a single side dvd?
