New Nikon Lenses At PMA 2010We recently visited with Nikon at the 2010 PMA tradeshow in Anaheim, California where they showed us the two latest Nikkor lenses, the AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR and AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED. They also showed us their recently updated pro 70-200mm zoom lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. In this video, Steve Heiner, Senior Tech Manager for Nikon gives us an overview of all three lenses.

Note: I apologize for the poor focus in this video. However, for those of you thinking about buying an HD DSLR for video, the focus issues here illustrate the biggest problem with DSLR video – no continuous auto focus. At this time there is no digital SLR with fully functioning auto focus in the video mode. The camera I used does have touch-up auto focus but it’s a bit iffy – especially with a moving subject like we have here. The key to good focus with current HD DSLRs is strategy. In this case, I pre-focused on Steve’s face. What I should have done was focused closer, on the camera. It wouldn’t have mattered if Steve was a bit out-of-focus. But it’s pretty bad when the real subjects – the lenses – are soft. Live and learn. Next time I’ll do better. Hopefully the information in the video was still interesting and this note on the focus is useful to photographers looking at a digital SLR for shooting video.

The focus issue in the video did not bother me at all.
Good info here. Would love to try the 24mmf1.4 I’ll bet the bokah would be very smooth.

Thanks – glad the focus didn’t bother you. It bothered me, though. Plus, I thought it was a useful illustration of the main problem with using a DSLR for video. And yeah, the 24mm f/1.4 looks wonderful. That would make a great lens for night time street photography or club photos.
