About another view
Hi everybody - I'm another view, a.k.a. Steve Muntz. I came up with the name with the last boards we had here because every time someone looked at a thread it was recorded as a view; so I was just "another view"
I've been a member for quite a while and am excited to be one of the moderators for the Viewfinder forum. My adventure in photography began when I was in middle school due to a grandfather and uncle who were both active photographers. My interests drifted more towards music later in high school and the next several years, but began using a camera again several years ago. Soon I missed having the controls of a "real" camera so I bought the old manual Nikon FE that I always wanted when I was starting out. It didn't take more than a few rolls of film to get hooked on photography again!
At that point, my interest was in nature and wildlife photography. I discovered all of the hard work involved in getting a great shot and wanted to learn more. After reading a couple of books I found out about Nikon School, which was a turning point for my interest in different subjects. Sam Garcia, one of the instructors, had an incredible way for presenting his varied subjects in such a dramatic way. Another turning point happened at a workshop I attended where photographer Layne Kennedy described his work as fine-art photojournalism. I hadn't heard those terms used together, but it's an ideal that I work towards. To me, it means that an image can stand on it's own as a strong photograph but still have a deeper meaning.
Currently, I'm a proponent of both digital and film. I think both have their places, and I use one or the other where I feel it's at the greatest advantage. Following Sam's influence, I shoot a variety of subjects myself. I've lived most of my life in Northern Illinois but also enjoy traveling and road trips. Seeing a new place is always inspiring photographically. Water, especially the Great Lakes area, is one of my favorites and I'll also spend a lot of time sea kayaking as well. Still being involved in music, I find musicians a great subject as well. Other projects have included weddings and events as well as sports, product shots, portraits and architecture.
The forums here are a great exchange of methods, ideas and photography. I hope this exchange is as beneficial to others as it has been to me.
